England National Team Crisis: What Needs To Be Done and Why Youth Is The Future
After England's recent dismal bore draw with lowly Montenegro in a 2012 European qualifier, surely Mr Capello is going to revise his tactics and squad selection for the upcoming friendly with France. The friendly would prove a great time to try playing youngsters considering France are in a worse state than England after a disgraceful world cup and a number of players banned by the FFF.
Mr Capello goes wrong by totally contradicting his own policies, for example Capello said in a infamous interview he gave with ITV that he would not pick former skipper David Beckham for the national side again, because he was 'too old'. Fast forward to October and what does the Italian do? - pick Bolton striker Kevin Davies for his first England cap at the maturing age of 33.
I understand that England had injury problems in their forward line but surely he would be wiser to pick a young, hungry striker who realistically has a long-term future with the national side than a player who would be 35 by the next international tournament.
The template for bringing young players into the full international side has to be England's conqueror's in South Africa - Germany, who brought in the likes of Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller, Sami Khedira and Manuel Nuer. Germany took a risk and got great rewards reaching the semi-finals of the world cup and there youngsters earned worldwide recognition and admiration for the way they played. It was these German youngsters who lit up a dull World Cup at times with fluent counter attacking football.
England are going to continue to under achieve unless they start picking young players.
Here are players I think should be in the England squad NOW:
1) Kerion Gibbs - has featured without doubt Ashley Cole's eventual successor
2) Jack Whilshire - has also featured like Gibbs, but I believe Whilshire is now worthy of a starting XI place(see Gareth Barry's performance against Montenigro).
3) Marc Albrighton - very talented winger will be fighting with Theo Walcott and Aaron Lennon for the right hand side spot in the near distant future definatley should be picked ahead of Shaun Wright-Phillips.
4) Jack Rodwell - currently injured but can't understand how he hasn't got a England cap to his name yet.
5) Daniel Sturridge - very promising player with pace, power and leathal left foot.
And finally here are some players for the future:
1) Chris Smalling - given good performances already in his short time at Manchester United and good performances for the under 21's.
2) Josh Mceachran - promising Chelsea youngster, big things are expected of him at the bridge.
3) Tom Cleverley - on loan to Wigan Athletic from Manchester United had a terrific spell at Watford in 09/10 season and a mainstay in the under 21's.
