Buried Alive Match: Attitude Era Concept in a PG Era Environment
If there was ever a match that is synonymous with the words "violent" and "sadistic" then its none other than the Buried Alive Match. On October 20, 1996 the WWE gave us a match that featured The Undertaker and Mankind at their best, long before Hell in a Cell in 98. I mean, you just gotta see to believe it. There is no other match that I would consider to be so brutal and barbaric that does not involve any steel in it. I, as a huge fan of the match, am very excited to see its return.
There has only been four Buried Alive Matches in the history of the WWE. All of them included the Undertaker, all of them was extreme and all of them was so very not PG. And that is where the problem now lies.
Thinking back, I believe the most extreme match I have seen WWE put on this year, is the CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio match at Over the limit, where CM Punk was busted open and there were very impressive spots. Keep in mind, we already had Hell in the Cell and Elimination Chamber. I am still considering the hair vs. mask match as most violent.
Now the Buried Alive Match is synonymous with VERY EXTREME, as there is no Buried Alive match that was not a classic. Even the Mr. Mcmahon vs. Undertaker match had its merits. And now in an era where its pro-kid and anti violence, you can bet we are going to have a problem.
I wept when I saw the Hell in a Cell in a fixed PPV in the WWE. I only want one HIAC and I want a boiling feud in it. The damn thing is an annual extravaganza before it was placed in a PPV, No WWE, Cena and Orton in the Cell is a bad idea. Not unless Orton has a chair or Cena has a sledgehammer. But its PG, so we get to see both guys look already spent in the six minute mark. And I wanna forget about this year's HIAC matches. Bottomline, the HIAC is now boring. Sad but true, really.
Did you see Taker and Kane in their HIAC match? It may sound obvious, but Taker is getting old. The almighty Deadman is not what he used to be. So do not expect the same feel you got when you saw Taker in the previous Buried Alive matches. This one at bragging rights is gonna be a slow paced one. And with decreased usage of weapons, I would imagine a lot of straggling with the cable wires if that is still legal since I believe that got Daniel Bryan fired.
Ok now, think about it. What weapons are they gonna use at the Buried Alive match? The urn, I would bet. Kane whacked Taker with it last time so I'm guessing Taker is going to return the favor.
No more chairs ever since the Chris Benoit incident. I think there is going to be a shovel present, so I guess Kane can whack the Undertaker with it.
A sledgehammer? TV Monitor? Micheal Cole? They should at least break an announcer's table. I mean Paul Bearer has to do something.
I think the belt itself can be used. But seeing Kane or The Undertake use it is just lame. What I wouldn't give to see a flaming 2x4 wrapped in barbed wire. *Sigh*
And when The Undertaker is older, Kane is getting bigger. Face it, both of them is not as agile as they used to be. Unless both man can put on a Wrestlemania performance, I see this Buried Alive match to be a forgettable one.
How bout the move sets? I wanna see both men dish out a chokeslam. Maybe onto the open grave. They can tilt the angle of the cameras so we won't see the soft bed thing the superstars can land on, its no big deal. The tombstone piledriver is imminent. Maybe we can see both men do a flying clothsline.
God, this match is something I used to play on my Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 ps2 console. I can't believe I finally get to see it for real and its not gonna meet some of my expectations (Kane bloodied and Undertaker limping).
Lastly, this may not be a logical move but I hope to see someone run in and help somebody. Its a basic formula of the match! I mean Kane helped Vince Mcmahon at the last Buried Alive match and Austin at the second one. Even Terry Gordy showed his damn face at the very first Buried Alive match. I just don't know who the guy is.
I am betting that the feud ends at Bragging Rights with The Undertaker winning the whole shabang and getting revenge on Paul Bearer. Or if it doesn't, Kane once again wins it thanks to an interference and The Undertaker does his "Deadman rising from the ashes" routine and the two wails it out for the final time at Survivor Series. And lemme guess, a Last Ride match?
Anyways, tune in at Bragging Rights and thank you for reading. Feel free to comment.
