Player Duels: Les Ferdinand Vs Teddy Sheringham
Player Duels is back again! This is the fifth instalment of this series in which I compare two players and ask all readers to leave a comment and vote who you think was the better player. You can find links to the other four at the bottom of this page, where voting is still open.
Today, the duel is between two of England's and the Premier League's greatest ever strikers: Les Ferdinand and Teddy Sheringham.
Both players had incredible natural talent. They were both good on the ground and in the air, and were deadly finishers. They both had extraordinary longevity as well, with both players playing until their 40's.
Les Ferdinand
10 clubs in 20 years allowed "Sir Les" to endear himself to hundreds of thousands of fans. Ferdinand could use both feet, and was equally as good with his head, scoring countless headers.
His most famous days came at QPR, Newcastle and Tottenham. At QPR, where he started his career, he scored 80 goals in 163 games. At Newcastle he scored 41 goals in 68 games, and at Tottenham he netted 33 times in 118 games.
During his time at Bolton he became the first player to have scored for six different Premier League clubs, and in 2001, he had the honour of scoring the 10,000th Premier League goal.
His total career stats are 184 goals in 443 appearances. He also won 17 England caps, scoring five goals. His 149 league goals put him fifth in the all-time list of EPL goal scorers.
Teddy Sheringham
Also a 10 club man, but this time spread over 26 years, Teddy Sheringham was another fan favourite almost everywhere he played. Much like Ferdinand, Sheringham was deadly in the air, and inside the box their were few better.
His best days came at Millwall, Tottenham and Manchester United. At Millwall he scored 93 goals in 220 appearances, at Tottenham he managed 98 in 236 over two spells, and at Manchester United he scored 31 goals in 104 games, including the equaliser in the 1999 Champions League final.
Overall, his career statistics are as follows: 288 goals in 755 appearances in the leagues. He also played 51 times for England, scoring 11 goals.
His Premier League tally of 146 is just a few goals behind Ferdinand's, putting one space below him at sixth on the all-time scoring list.
So, ladies and gentlemen, who is your pick? Les Ferdinand or Teddy Sheringham? Remember anyone can vote, just leave a comment saying who you have picked.
