NFL Power Rankings Top 10 Teams: Who Is the Team To Beat After Week 5?

Old AccountOct 12, 2010

Week five of the NFL season concluded last night, with a big win by the New York Jets over the Minnesota Vikings.

We begin to get a glimpse as who are the elite teams in the league. There are no longer any undefeated teams in football with the Chiefs losing last week, but are they able to stay in the top ten of the power rankings.

Today I am only focusing on ranking the top teams, and saying who the team to beat is after week five.

Honorable Mention: Tennessee Titans, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans

10. New Orleans Saints

I am giving the benefit of the doubt to the defending champs. A loss at Arizona has made the Saints one of the bigger disappointments thus far.

Injuries have plagued the running game, making the passing offense predictable and easier to defend.

The Saints defense is also battling injuries in the secondary, and let rookie quarterback Max Hall have a decent game against them.

Some point during the season the team will come together when everyone returns, but for now they need to focus on not falling behind in a division that seems to be involving three teams right now.

9. Green Bay Packers

The pre-season paper champs of the NFC are near the bottom of the top ten, and for good reason.

Injuries on both sides of the ball are already hurting their hopes of playing in the big game this season. The defense continues to get banged up, and now the offense is feeling the same affect.

Jermichael Finley will be out for three weeks, and quarterback Aaron Rodgers might miss this week's game due to a concussion.

Watch out Green Bay. You are in a competitive NFC North, and face a schedule that can spell doom for this squad.

8. Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs proved to be a team to be reckon with in the AFC. The 10 point loss on the road against Indianapolis proved a few things for me.

The running game of Jamaal Charles and Thomas Jones is for real. The defensive unit ( especially the front) may be the most improved out of any team in the NFL.

However, what sets them back is the inability to have a good passing game. Matt Cassel needs to start living up to his contract, which is by putting more points on the board against some of the leagues elite.

7. Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are tied for the best record in the NFC right now.

Matt Ryan is playing solid football right now, and the running game of Michael Turner is still looking to emerge this season.

The biggest thing though is the improvement on defense, as it finally seems Mike Smith's scheme is sticking on his team.

My only issue is the competition they have played. Their biggest win is against a struggling Saints team. I am just looking for them to get one more win against an elite team, and I will be sold on them.

6. New England Patriots

Coming off a bye week, the post Randy Moss era begins in Foxboro.

I said it from the start of the season. As long as Tom Brady is the corner back, they do indeed have a chance.

The offense is still capable of putting up 25-30 points a game. In the end, it will come down to the defense.

Can the running defense improve, along with the young secondary?

5. Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts proved to still be among the leagues elite.

Peyton Manning made enough plays in the win over the Chiefs. More importantly,a running game emerged, which will be key to the Colts success.

The biggest question will be the defense. They stopped a weak offense in the Chiefs, but how will they fare among the leagues potent offenses?

4. Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears, in my opinion, are the best team in the NFC.

The defense is returning to form similar to the one that brought them to a Super Bowl a few years ago.

Julius Peppers is certainly not underachieving since his big contract.

Can Mike Martz get the passing game going with Jay Cutler as the quarterback? If so, this is a dangerous team to face down the road.

3. Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are one of the leagues elite, but still has room to grow.

Ray Rice and the running game came out of it's shell last week against the 12th best run defense.

Ray Lewis and the Ravens defense is playing lights out, and this is without Ed Reed ( returning in two weeks).

Joe Flacco and the passing game continue to make strides, and once they click on all cylinders is when I make their case for being the best in the league.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers

9 of 10

The Pittsburgh Steelers were put down by most experts to begin the season. Now, they are 3-1 coming off the bye week, and return one of the best quarterbacks in football in Ben Roethlisberger.

Don't forget the Steelers defense, who arguably is the best in the league with the return of Troy Polamalu.

And this week they get to feast on the debut of Colt McCoy.

1. New York Jets

10 of 10
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - OCTOBER 11: Quarterback Mark Sanchez #6 of the New York Jets looks to throw a pass in the second quarter against the Minnesota Vikings at New Meadowlands Stadium on October 11, 2010 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Jets won 29-20

After the win over the Vikings, the Jets are the team to beat in the NFL right now.

Mark Sanchez is playing turnover free football, and the running game is pure dominant behind the offensive line.

More importantly, the defense is the best in the league, and continues to create trouble for opposing quarterbacks.
