College Football Power Rankings: The Top 25 Quarterbacks Heading Into Week 6

Michael PintoOct 5, 2010

There's no denying that Denard Robinson is the biggest individual story in college football right now. Not only is Michigan undefeated, but Robinson is playing his way into the record books and has to be the front-runner for the Heisman at this point.

He became the first player in NCAA history to pass for over 200 yards and rush for over 200 yards in the same game in the Wolverines' victory over Indiana.

Robinson already has over 900 yards rushing on the season, the highest total in the nation by nearly 200 yards.

Not a traditional quarterback, but a quarterback nonetheless, it's hard to argue he isn't the best in the business right now.

Check out how the rest of the quarterback rankings play out heading into Week 6.

25. Jerrod Johnson, Texas A&M

Yards: 1,274 / TD: 12 / INT: 8 / CMP%: 60.8 / Rating: 137.20

Jerrod Johnson put up some huge numbers on Thursday night with over 400 yards passing and five touchdowns, but his turnovers were really costly in a tight loss to Oklahoma State.

It was the second straight game Johnson has thrown four interceptions, with his last one in this one leading to the game-winning field goal for the Cowboys in the closing seconds.

24. Dayne Crist, Notre Dame

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,358 / TD: 10 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 58.2 / Rating: 129.93

Crist has struggled with his accuracy the last couple of weeks, but in Brian Kelly's spread offense, he's throwing the ball a ton, so a few missed passes are understandable.

In Notre Dame's win over Boston College, Crist was 24-44 for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns, though he was intercepted once as well. He also had a short rushing touchdown.

23. Taylor Martinez, Nebraska

2010 Stats

Yards: 532 / TD: 2 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 59.6 / Rating: 139.10 / Rushing Yards: 496 / AVG: 9.4 / TD: 8

Martinez wasn't needed for much in Nebraska's Week 4 win over South Dakota State, but his performance in limited minutes was forgettable; he was off in Week 5.

After rushing for at least 100 yards and two touchdowns in each of his first three games, Martinez was held to 75 yards rushing and failed to find the end zone. He also was 6-14 for 140 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

ST. LOUIS - SEPTEMBER 4: Blaine Gabbert #11 of the University of Missouri Tigers looks to pass against the University of Illinois Fighting Illini during the State Farm Arch Rivalry game on September 4, 2010 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri.

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,039 / TD: 5 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 68.2 / Rating: 132.97

If you take away Gabbert's interception against Miami (OH), he had a near-perfect game in Missouri's 51-13 win a couple of weeks ago; Missouri had a bye this past week.

Gabbert was 15-21 with 187 yards and a touchdown, adding another 20 yards rushing with a second score. Of course, if the game were closer, his stats would've been much more impressive.

21. Jacory Harris, Miami

2010 Stats

Yards: 895 / TD: 10 / INT: 8 / CMP%: 57.1 / Rating: 134.60

Harris got bit by the turnover bug once again, and while Miami is on its way to a great season, Harris is on his way to a 20-plus interception season.

He's thrown eight interceptions in his last three games, but did have four touchdown passes in the first half in Miami's victory over Clemson.

20. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State

6 of 25

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,259 / TD: 13 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 71.3 / Rating: 169.69

Weeden came back to Earth in Oklahoma State's win over Texas A&M, coming up way short of his performance against Tulsa the week before.

After throwing for 409 yards and six touchdowns in Week 4, Weeden threw for 284 yards and two touchdowns against the Aggies, but turned the ball over twice as well.

19. Matt Barkley, USC

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,127 / TD: 12 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 65.9 / Rating: 163.77

Barkley and the passing game weren't really utilized in USC's matchup with Washington, with the running game going for nearly 300 yards, but in hindsight, the Trojans might have done things differently.

Washington pulled off the huge upset at the Coliseum with a field goal for the win as time expired and Barkely threw for just 186 yards with no touchdowns.

18. Nick Foles, Arizona

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,089 / TD: 6 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 74.5 / Rating: 149.84

Foles and Arizona have been one of the biggest early-season surprises in 2010, having gone 4-0 with their most recent wins coming against Iowa and Cal; Arizona was yet another team that had a bye in Week 5.

Despite the fact that Foles has thrown an interception in every contest, he's completing nearly 75 percent of his passes and is 13th in the nation in passing yards

17. Tyrod Taylor, Virginia Tech

2010 Stats

Yards: 869 / TD: 8 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 61.6 / Rating: 155.96 / Rushing Yards: 322 / AVG: 5.1 / TD: 0

Taylor and Virginia Tech had a real rough start to the season, but the Hokies have won three in a row now and appear to be back on track after a big comeback win over N.C. State last weekend.

Taylor wasn't very accurate in this one, but he was great when it counted at the finish. He passed for 123 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, adding another 121 yards on the ground.

16. Christian Ponder, Florida State

2010 Stats

Yards: 844 / TD: 8 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 60.5 / Rating: 131.24 / Rushing Yards: 108 / AVG: 2.4 / TD: 2

Ponder didn't really dazzle in FSU's 34-14 win over Virginia, but this was a contest the Seminoles leaned on their running game anyway.

Ponder was 17 of 29 for 172 yards and a touchdown, while FSU's running game produced over 250 yards and three scores.

15. Darron Thomas, Oregon

Yards: 1,060 / TD: 13 / INT: 5 / CMP%: 57.8 / Rating: 148.10 / Rushing Yards: 219 / AVG: 6.4 / TD: 2

Thomas is a player we've admittedly passed over in previous rankings, but he's continued to play strong all season and put up a really impressive showing in Oregon's 52-31 victory over Stanford last weekend.

In the contest of Pac-10 heavyweights, Thomas was 20-29 for 232 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also added another 117 yards and a score on the ground.

14. Kirk Cousins, Michigan State

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,132 / TD: 9 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 67.5 / Rating: 164.82

We'll keep saying what we've been saying all season long. Cousins hasn't been spectacular, but he gets the job done week-in and week-out, and Michigan State is still unbeaten.

The Spartans had a huge win over Wisconsin in Week 5, a contest not many people expected them to win. Cousins was 20-29 for 269 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions in the 34-24 victory.

13. Ricky Stanzi, Iowa

13 of 25
TUCSON, AZ - SEPTEMBER 18: Quarterback Ricky Stanzi #12 of the Iowa Hawkeyes in action during the college football game against the Arizona Wildcats at Arizona Stadium on September 18, 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. The Wildcats defeated the Hawkeyes 34-27.

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,226 / TD: 10 / INT: 2 / CMP%: 67.8 / Rating: 176.84

Stanzi was solid in a big win over Penn State, completing over 70 percent of his passes for 227 yards and two total touchdowns, though he did throw an interception as well.

Iowa is about to go through a gauntlet, with Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State as its next three opponents. There's no better time to judge Stanzi than that.

12. Colin Kaepernick, Nevada

Yards: 1,048 / TD: 7 / INT: 2 / CMP%: 69.9 / Rating: 157.02 / Rushing Yards: 548 / AVG: 7.9 / TD: 9

Kaepernick had another great all-around game in Week 5 with 124 yards, a touchdown, and an interception through the air and 97 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Nevada is rolling, now 5-0 on the season and you can thank Kaepernick for a huge part of that; he's been nearly unstoppable so far this year.

11. Robert Griffin III, Baylor

Yards: 1,351 / TD: 11 / INT: 2 / CMP%: 62.0 / Rating: 151.40 / Rushing Yards: 221 / AVG: 5.0 / TD: 4

Griffin reminded everyone just how good he can be in Baylor's 55-7 over Kansas in Week 5, throwing three touchdown passes for the second consecutive week.

He also threw for a career-high 380 yards, adding another 64 yards on the ground and a fourth touchdown.

10. Greg McElroy, Alabama

2010 Stats

Yards: 983 / TD: 7 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 69.9 / Rating: 166.67

McElroy wasn't really needed for much this week, with the defense carrying the load against Florida in Alabama's impressive 31-6 victory.

The Crimson Tide's quarterback had forgettable numbers in the contest, throwing for just 84 yards and rushing for 33 yards, but he failed to find the endzone.

9. Cameron Newton, Auburn

Yards: 928 / TD: 12 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 65.5 / Rating: 191.44 / Rushing Yards: 474 / AVG: 6.2 / TD: 5

Newton wasn't needed for much in Auburn's 52-3 blowout over Louisiana-Monroe, but he still put up a huge statline.

Throwing the ball only 19 times in the contest, Newton threw for 245 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He's got Kentucky, Arkansas, and LSU up next.

8. Russell Wilson, N.C. State

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,474 / TD: 14 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 55.5 / Rating: 140.32 / Rushing Yards: 118 / AVG: 2.6 / TD: 1

On the other side of the Virginia Tech-N.C. State matchup, Russell Wilson threw for 362 yards and three touchdowns, but also added three interceptions.

His turnovers played a big role in the Wolfpack blowing a 17-point lead in the Hokies 41-30 victory. N.C. State had been unbeaten before then, and its hot start to the season might have just cooled off.

7. Jake Locker, Washington

2010 Stats

Yards: 936 / TD: 7 / INT: 2 / CMP%: 53.8 / Rating: 129.02 / Rushing Yards: 212 / AVG: 5.4 / TD: 2

Locker finally had the type of game that had him pegged as a Heisman candidate heading into the season.

After a miserable outing against Nebraska a couple of weeks ago, Locker was huge in Washington's 32-31 win over USC. He threw for 310 yards and a touchdown with 112 yards rushing.

6. Landry Jones, Oklahoma

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,457 / TD: 11 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 63.9 / Rating: 137.35

The Red River Rivalry ended with Oklahoma on top and a great game from Landry Jones in the 28-20 victory.

Jones was 25-39 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. His 1,457 passing yards through the first five weeks of the year is the fourth-highest total in the nation.

5. Andrew Luck, Stanford

21 of 25

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,253 / TD: 13 / INT: 4 / CMP%: 62.8 / Rating: 157.53 / Rushing Yards: 202 / AVG: 8.1 / TD: 2

Luck looked like the best quarterback in the first quarter of Stanford's loss to Oregon in Week 5, and while he finished the contest with solid stats, he did almost all of his damage in the first half.

Luck finished the game with 341 yards and two touchdowns, but threw a pair of picks as well, and the Cardinal got beat bad in this one.

4. Kellen Moore, Boise State

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,069 / TD: 11 / INT: 1 / CMP%: 66.4 / Rating: 176.19

Moore was nearly perfect in Boise State's 59-0 win over New Mexico State, but the Broncos fell to fourth in the rankings after Oregon's victory over Stanford.

He didn't need to do much in this one, with only 18 passing attempts, but he turned them into 196 yards and three touchdowns, completing over 72 percent of his passes.

3. Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State

Yards: 1,015 / TD: 12 / INT: 3 / CMP%: 65.0 / Rating: 161.67 / Rushing Yards: 373 / AVG: 6.9 / TD: 3

Pryor gave Ohio State fans a bit of a scare in the Buckeyes' win over Illinois, temporarily leaving the game in the third quarter after sustaining an injury.

He returned to the contest a few minutes later, though, and finished with good, but not great all-around numbers in the 24-13 victory.

2. Ryan Mallett, Arkansas

24 of 25

2010 Stats

Yards: 1,438 / TD: 10 / INT: 5 / CMP%: 68.8 / Rating: 173.04

If Mallett had played just a little bit better against Alabama in Week 4, Arkansas would have won the game and he'd be on the fast track for the Heisman, but it obviously didn't go down like that.

Mallett turned the ball over three times in the contest, making some serious mistakes that cost his team big-time. He still managed to pass for 357 yards and a touchdown, but this was his chance to really show his worth. Arkansas was off in Week 5.

1. Denard Robinson, Michigan

There's not much to say about Robinson other than WOW. It doesn't matter who the opponent is, Robinson has been putting up massive numbers, with his performance in Week 5 the best yet.

In Michigan's 42-35 win over Indiana, Robinson threw for over 200 yards and rushed for over 200 yards. He's on pace to rush for nearly 2,000 yards this season.
