With Julio Caesar Chavez Jr., "The Legend Goes On"
WBC Silver Middleweight champion Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. will fight fellow Mexican Alfonso Gomez Dec. 4 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
Chavez (41-0-1-1, 30 KOs), whose nickname is “The Legend Goes On” because he is the son of iconic prizefighter Julio Caesar Chavez Sr., had hoped to imminently scrap WBA super welterweight titlist Miguel Cotto.
However, after Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs) elected to remove himself from the ring for the remainder of 2010, Chavez instead settled for a match against Gomez (22-4-2, 11 KOs).
Gomez, a 29-year-old who ranked third out of 16 fighters on the reality TV show The Contender, is an adequate pugilist.
Nevertheless, Gomez will be badly beaten in a timely fashion this winter by the 24-year-old Chavez.
“I take Junior within nine rounds,” said Brad Sherwood, 30, a native of South Boston who is employed as a trainer at Gold’s Gym in Medford. “He is, after all, the son of a man who banged Salma Hayek.”
Chavez has fought a host of chumps since he made his professional debut in the squared-circle with a unanimous decision victory over Jonathan Hernandez in Sept. 2003.
Chavez possesses tremendous power in both of his fists and he is the quintessential tough and rugged Mexican fighter.
However, Chavez Jr. may never reach the heights that his famed father did as a boxer.
Still, with Chavez Jr., “The Legend Goes On.”
