Hooliganism and Anarchism: Do they Go with Italian Football?

Sheikh ZakariaDec 13, 2007

For the past few years, a plethora of English fans were targeted for being unruly and rowdy when their team lost or drew in away matches. A recent flashback of England's defeat to Croatia away to Zagreb says it all.

World football governing body FIFA censured FA countless times for failing to control their fans. Red alerts were even issued, which could have resulted in expulsion from the Euros and the World Cups.

But who except the police would want to deal with this Barmy Army?

Now another infamous pack of football fans have enrolled themselves in the most gruesome fashion—the Serie A fanatics. Quite understandably, their passion for football knows no bounds and when it starts to cross the barrier things really get out of hand.

Who are to blame for the recent riots outside the Stadio Olympico and the IFA building at Rome?

None but those roguish bunch of fans, to whom personal grievances matter more than the football. Yes, we know about the heritage of rivalries and Derby games, but that doesn't mean that people should strangle their humanity and go for a brawl. There have even been situations where some of these hooligans went for vandalism.

What is the aftermath of all these troubles? Casualties, fines, games behind closed, doors and condolences.

To make matters worse, the wrath compounds instead of simmering down and the hooligans look for another inconspicuous incident to mushroom into something huge and fatal.

A couple of months back, several Serie A games were postponed and even halted midway when some crowds were remonstrating inside the stadiums as a Lazio supporter in Italy was shot dead by a policeman. Lazio lost the game and their supporters couldn't find a better way to vent out their disapproval than picketing whatever things they had within reach. Streets were blocked, shop windows and car glasses smashed, and fierce confrontation with the police took place. Then, the 'accidental' killing occurred and the entire sequence of events rocked their National Football.

The saga doesn't end here. What about the away fans of Man Utd who went to watch their team play against Roma last season and got whipped with batons? Just because they reacted to the jeers of the home fans, and they had to pay the price to the stadium police.

Last night's game against Roma revived the nightmares of the travelling fans, as just before kickoff, five United fans were stabbed by the Romans outside the stadium, again without any objective. Thank God the police were not the culprits that time.

Fans apart, the Italian government must share the humiliation with their FA for their reckless efforts to have things under their control

My question: How many times do the travelling fans have to endure such kind of inhumane treatment from the Italian police and fans collectively?

Eventually, the big deal is with the football and if the Italians are more interested with Mortal Combat, somebody please tell them Hollywood or their very own Colosseum is the place to go.
