WWE Hell in a Cell Preview: 10 Reasons to Watch
This Sunday will be the second installment of the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. I know what you are thinking; wasn't there just a pay-per-view that just happened? To that, I simply sigh and reply "Yes...".
The truth is that this pay-per-view seems like it was almost forgotten by WWE Creative and squeezed into the schedule at the eleventh hour. With just two weeks to prepare storylines for the show, many may overlook this Sunday. However, I am here to tell you that Hell In A Cell has a chance to be a dark horse choice for pay-per-view of the year, with the correct booking. Here are ten reasons to watch this Sunday's event from Dallas, Texas.
1) Anything Can Happen In Hell In A Cell Matches
1 of 10
There are at least two Hell In A Cell matches for Sunday (although I am still convinced that Barrett/Cena has to be inside the cell also). While we may no longer be in the era of Rikishi being tossed off the top of the cage or the Big Boss Man being hung from a noose that is attached to the cage, we may just end up seeing something that we haven't seen in a long time or something we've never seen before.
After all, you have to admit that with the PG era coming into WWE, Creative has tried different, less violent ways to drop your jaw. They may just surprise you on Sunday.
2) John Morrison Gets A Title Shot
2 of 10
Sunday will mark the first pay-per-view singles title match for John Morrison since participating in the Smackdown Elimination Chamber back in February. Morrison received praise for it, but was only rewarded with tag team title chances with R-Truth. It has been difficult since Morrison lost his Intercontinental Championship to Drew McIntyre last year. In fact, at last year's Hell In A Cell pay-per-view, Morrison defended his IC Title against Dolph Ziggler, only to lose it to McIntyre at TLC. In the nine months since then, Morrison has seemed to lose his way.
However, John Morrison seems to be back on track. His Parkour gimmick is a little bit lame, but he is now wrestling some of the best matches of his career in 2010. He even showed a bit of his heel side again this past episode of RAW, where he was given this title match. While it's unlikely that he will win on Sunday, this could be the start of the rebirth of John Morrison.
I suppose he handled his punishment well from being on NXT.
3) The Miz Finally Shows A Submission Move?
3 of 10
The Miz competes on Sunday in a match that was "just invented" a Triple Threat Submissions Count Anywhere Match. While the Triple Threat part may be new, it is the second time that a Submissions Count Anywhere Match will take place, with the first being at last year's Breaking Point between DX and Legacy.
We all saw The Miz attempt a Figure Four Leg Lock on RAW against Daniel Bryan, but it's just not Miz's style. However, it wasn't Cena's style either until he whipped out the STFU from out of nowhere. (Yes, I'm aware that it is now the STF, but I will always see it as the STFU. Sorry, kiddies.)
The Miz is looked to be molding himself into a complete main eventer, but Sunday will show how complete he truly is. An impressive submission hold, win or lose, will do wonders to Miz's star power.
4) The Fall Of Sheamus Begins At Hell In A Cell
4 of 10
I'm calling it now.
Sheamus became a RAW superstar on October 26, 2009. In that one year, he has been almost unstoppable, that is, until the kryptonite (WWE Championship) is around his waist.
Creative is going to give Randy Orton a long reign now, assuming he doesn't hurt himself yet again. Expect Sheamus to be moved down a peg and take the long way back to the top. He won't job to people or anything, but he won't be nearly as dominant as before.
Every year, there is that superstar riding on a high that quickly becomes a low. Last year, at Hell In A Cell, in fact, CM Punk lost his World Heavyweight Championship to The Undertaker and is yet to wear gold since. Instead, Punk's last year has had him build and destroy a faction, get his head shaven, and wear a mask for a little while. Sheamus' year will look a little differently, but it likely won't be golden either.
5) John Cena Joins Nexus
5 of 10
This was my immediate thoughts on the matter and I haven't wavered one bit. Nexus is lasting until at least October. Their symbol is on the Bragging Rights poster. They aren't going anywhere.
Cena's character has taken a hit with this Nexus storyline, which is exactly what it needed for a lot of the Cena haters to lay off for a while. Now, Cena has looked more human than he has in years. I could have put a picture of Cena with a Photoshop-ed Nexus shirt on, but this picture shows how much this group has damaged his reputation.
Will a heel turn come of this? Who knows? All that is for certain is that millions of kids will cry themselves to sleep on Sunday night.
6) Championships Now Change Hands Inside The Cell
6 of 10
A championship had never changed hands inside Hell In A Cell until last year, when it occurred twice. Both The Undertaker and Randy Orton left the cell with gold. Both will enter again on Sunday.
Orton was just given the gold two weeks ago, while the only gold that Taker will have is the urn that Paul Bearer carries around. The Undertaker last held a championship at Elimination Chamber, when he lost it to Chris Jericho.
In a way, the rematches back from February are being granted Sunday. Both The Undertaker and Sheamus, who both were never given rematches for their lost titles in the Elimination Chamber, are both challenging for titles inside Hell In A Cell.
7) There Are Only Four Promoted Matches So Far
7 of 10
Even if two of them are inside the cell, there is a lot of space still to be had from other matches. Perhaps Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre will defend the tag titles against The Hart Dynasty for the 30th time. The American Airlines Center, who is hosting the event, is promoting a Lay-Cool vs Natalya match for the Unified Divas Championship, although WWE is yet to officially announce that.
The reason for the card being so light right now is likely due to Smackdown's live SyFy debut tomorrow night. Any matches from Smackdown are probably going to be announced right then and there.
While I know it won't happen, I'm hoping that Hell In A Cell has three matches inside the structure, just like last year. Two championship matches are already going on inside. While I would love to see Cena/Barrett in the cell, a curveball by WWE with an impromptu Hell In A Cell match would be amazing.
8) The Undertaker's Farewell Tour Begins
8 of 10
The Undertaker is going to retire very soon. That is why it only made sense to bring Paul Bearer back to manage him off into the sunset. It will be a sad day to imagine WWE with The Deadman. However, we can probably say that this will be the last Hell In A Cell match to feature The Undertaker.
Sunday will mark The Undertaker's 12th Hell In A Cell match. There will only have been 21 instances of the match after Sunday. Rumors are also circulating about a possible Buried Alive match in the coming months. It seems as if all of The Undertaker's match concepts will be used at least one last time with him, if possible.
9) Chris Jericho Not On Card
9 of 10
For the first time since One Night Stand 2008, which was June 1, 2008, Chris Jericho will not appear on a pay-per-view. Just to show how long ago that was, the following are just some of the superstars that appeared that night:
Jeff Hardy
Umaga
Tommy Dreamer
Bam Neely
John "Bradshaw" Layfield
Shocking, indeed. The point of this slide is to show that, whether he will ever return to professional wrestling or not, Jericho's spot at the top of the company is now vacant and Hell In A Cell could prove to be the launching point for a superstar to make their way into the main event.
10) Bragging Rights Is Just Three Weeks Later
10 of 10
As long as Sunday's card is filled, I don't care what happens. However, I feel like there may be a link to Bragging Rights, which will occur in just three weeks. Technically, a Natalya/Lay-Cool match would be inter-promotional, although The Hart Dynasty can apparently show up on Smackdown whenever they please.
I believe that Nexus will have a six-on-six Bragging Rights match against Smackdown superstars. That seems like it could be put into motion tomorrow night, when Nexus invades Smackdown.
