NFL Week 4 Power Rankings: Where Do the Green Bay Packers Belong at 2-1?

Rob BeloteSep 30, 2010

NFL power rankings are a subjective thing, and rarely are two peoples' lists ever exactly the same. At my site, www.GuysNation.com, I took a hard look at all 32 teams, compared their records, the average points they've scored and allowed per game, and their strength of schedule to come up with NFL power rankings for Week 4 in the 2010 NFL season.

One of the teams that was hard to place were the Green Bay Packers. They are one of several teams who have started off the season with a record of 2-1, so I really had to compare who they've played, where the games were held, what the final outcomes were, and what's going on with their team.

Unlike a lot of other teams, there's a lot to be excited about in Green Bay right now.

The Packers started out the season with a hugely impressive win, not only by beating the Eagles, but doing so IN PHILADELPHIA.  It's a hard place to play for NFC East teams who have to travel there every single season, but for the five non-divisional opponents who are slotted with a trip to the City of Brotherly Love (a term those fans use very loosely), it's not a fun time.  To call that environment "hostile" would be an understatement.

Though the win in Philadelphia was only by seven points, it's still a road win, and those don't come easy—especially against teams who are thought to be playoff bound.

There's nothing special about beating the Buffalo Bills, especially not when the game is played in Wisconsin.  The Green Bay Packers didn't just BEAT the Bills, they kicked their asses by more than three touchdowns.  THAT is a statement game.

Almost all of the NFL fans know what happened this past Monday, and I'm sorry to make the Packers fans have to relive it by reading what I'm going to say here.

Had Green Bay not been penalized so frequently against the Bears, they would've remained undefeated.  That win would've been huge, going to Chicago and getting a win against a division opponent would've certainly shifted the balance of power in the NFC North BIG TIME in Green Bay's favor.

But alas, it was not to be.

So how did I rank the Green Bay Packers?

Surely, they're ahead of a lot of the other 2-1 teams.

A friend of mine who I consulted when coming up with my power rankings said that head-to-head record doesn't necessarily need to come into play, and rather you should look at what they've done and consider how they would do in a best-of-seven series.

As he made a strong argument that the Packers would most likely beat the Bears five out of seven (if not six of seven), could I have put the Packers ahead of Chicago?

Kansas City doesn't have a great strength of schedule, is it possible that the Packers could be ahead of them too?
