Carmelo Anthony: Three Reasons He Should Not Accept Nets Trade

Matthew VerebSep 25, 2010

Just imagine the possibilities of these two players (pictured to the left) playing together one day. That will not be possible if Mr. Carmelo Anthony accepts a trade and agrees to a contract extension to join the New Jersey Nets. Anthony has publicly stated that he wants to join either the Chicago Bulls or his home state, New York Knicks. Here are three reasons why Carmelo Anthony should not join the Nets.

#1 Lack Of Star Power In New Jersey

Is the Net situation better than the Nuggets? I don't think so.

Carmelo Anthony has never played with a truly elite player. By joining the Nets, he will once again enter a situation where the team's success or failure rides solely on his shoulders. Center Brook Lopez is a nice player who should continue his development, but he is still a year or two away from having a dominant impact.

The collection of talent in New Jersey isn't as deep as it is in Denver and that alone would make signing an extension a precarious proposition.

Remember, the Nets still have two more seasons in New Jersey before making the move to Brooklyn.

#2 Can They Beat The Miami Heat?

Any team who wants to make it to the NBA Finals must go through the Heat. The Heat have truly assembled one of the best collections of talent in NBA history. Each of the Heat three main players (Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh) have individually led their teams to the playoffs with Wade and James collecting Eastern Conference Championships. Add in knock-down shooter Mike Miller and a plethora of minimum salary veterans that want a ring and the Heat have themselves a ferocious group of hungry players.

Can Carmelo Anthony, Brook Lopez, and Terrence Williams lead the Nets past the Heat?

I wouldn't count on it...

#3 New York State Of Mind

Carmelo Anthony has said it countless times. He wants to be a New York Knick. He wants to play 41 games per year in the World's Most Famous Arena. The Knicks have one of the game's premiere big men in A'mare Stoudemire and one of the best knockdown shooters in the game in Danilo Gallinari.

The only problem?

The Knicks do not have the assets to make the trade with the Nuggets. The Knicks only hope would be for Anthony to play out his final year in Denver and make the jump to the Big Apple in the off-season.

Unlike the Nets, the Knicks have that premiere player that Anthony desperately wants to play with. A combination of Anthony and Stoudemire would bring back a buzz to Madison Square Garden that has been absent for over a decade.

Ultimately, this is Carmelo Anthony's decision. None of us know whether or not the All-Pro will make the jump to the Eastern Conference right now. Eventually, Anthony will join the Eastern Conference. I just hope it won't be with the Nets.
