Shane Mosley Proves He Needs To Retire After Fighting Sergio Mora To a Draw

Colin LinneweberSep 23, 2010

Former WBA welterweight super champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley fought past WBC light middleweight titlist Sergio "The Latin Snake" Mora to a controversial draw in a junior middleweight bout Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The dull contest was akin to watching paint dry and both combatants were justifiably booed by the dissatisfied capacity crowd in "The City of Angels."

"We both fought hard," said Mosley, 39, a known abuser of performance enhancing drugs who is wrongly rated by Ring Magazine as the No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. "It was a good fight, a good decision."

Mosley (46-6-1-1, 39 KOs) pawed more punches than Mora (22-1-2, 6 KOs) did during the putrid affair.
However, Mora exhibited his defensive wizardry and Mosley virtually never landed a clean blow.

Conversely, Mora was able to periodically rock Mosley with the limited number of punches he threw in the 36-minute sleeper.

Because "The Latin Snake" connected with more flush shots, he believed he was winning the matchup.

"I should have listened to my corner," said Mora, 29, a native of East L.A. who became the first winner of NBC's The Contender. "They were telling me that it was a close fight. I thought I was winning, so I didn't fight as hard because I have respect for Shane. I didn't want to hurt him."

South Boston resident Brad Sherwood expressed disgust with Mora for his post-fight comments.

"How can a professional boxer hold back because he doesn't 'want to hurt him?' Every fan in attendance deserves a refund," said Sherwood, 30, who is employed as a personal trainer at Gold's Gym in Medford. "Another example of why boxing is a joke."

Although rogue and exceedingly frustrating, boxing may not be a complete "joke."

There are many superb prizefighter's competing in the sport today who have earned respect for their work in the squared circle.

Nevertheless, at nearly 40 and off the juice, Mosley is on the fringe of becoming a punchline and it's a shame that he is willingly hindering his legacy.
