Arkansas vs Georgia: Razorbacks Win Heartbreaker in the Last Seconds

Eric BowmanSep 18, 2010

Ryan Mallett broke the hearts of many Bulldog fans this afternoon. In what was a late-game thriller, Mallett connected with Greg Childs on a 40-yard pass with 15 seconds left to win the game and crush the spirits of the Bulldog Nation.

The No. 12 ranked Razorbacks were up 14 points heading into the fourth quarter but a different Georgia team showed up and tied the game with less than four minutes remaining on the clock.

The entire game Georgia’s offense looked dismal until they woke up in the fourth quarter. They were able to rally behind their defense which made back to back three and outs allowing the Aaron Murray and company to make it a game.

With just over two minutes remaining, the bulldogs had a chance but protection broke down and they were forced to punt after a three and out. Giving Mallett his chance to shine and make his case for Heisman front-runner.

Mallett threw three touchdowns while shredding the Bulldog secondary for 380 yards, averaging 11.5 a throw. One week it’s the run they can’t stop, and the next it’s the pass. But both weeks it’s the tackling.

The Bulldogs need to get back to the basics and learn how to wrap up. Too many times today they just hit the guy thinking it would be enough. And if that didn’t work they’d just go for the face mask. There were two clear face mask penalties that the refs completely missed.

These pups are weak and must practice the fundamentals once again this week. Two weeks in a row and you can’t tackle the opposing team. It’s quite pathetic to watch.

Also, what happened to this pressure the 3-4 is supposed to bring? It wasn’t shown until the fourth quarter. If they play the same way next week against Mississippi State, they could be looking at another loss.

And I know what you’re all thinking. “Fire Richt!” “Richt is on the hot seat now!” And you couldn’t be more wrong. He’ll get his D back to tackling and he’ll take what worked in the fourth quarter and build from there. He’s a solid coach with an inexperienced quarterback. There are going to be setbacks when a redshirt freshman starts for you.

The man who should be on the hot seat is offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. Two weeks in a row now the offense struggles to find its identity.  The play calls have been inconsistent and downright horrible at times. Third and one and you call a play action…what are you thinking?

Time and time again the Bulldogs ran the play-action. After awhile the other team realizes it’s just a fake. The play actions is effective when the run game is working, which wasn’t the case today. Mike Bobo calls plays by what would logically make sense and then doing the polar opposite. Three yards away from the goal line, oh let’s throw it three times. That is a terrible idea coach.

So don’t yell at Richt when he is no longer calling the plays. Perhaps he should take that reign back over, because Mike Bobo has been atrocious at it.

Also, don’t think the season is over. Granted it’s going to be very difficult to win the SEC East now but the Bulldogs have the ability to have solid season and end up in a good bowl. This isn’t a team heading back to Shreveport.

Georgia will get AJ Green back in a couple weeks and Caleb King should be healthy by next week. He was a game time decision today and the team didn’t feel safe playing him. Once they figure out how to tackle this team will start to gel and click as a solid unit. And by season’s end you’ll see the Junkyard Dawgs of old.
