MMA: 10 Fighters Who Should Retire

Joshua BoykenSep 17, 2010

There is several obvious names that pop up immediately when you read a title like this, and I'm sure you will see them on the list.

Although, there are several fighters that will surprisingly be on this list. Some may have won their last fight, or could be climbing the ladder into contendership.

Most of the list is not opinion it is based on facts about historic losses and the fights they have been in.

And obviously, if you have lost five or six of your last fights, you could very well be spotted on such a list.

One more thing, this is just an article; I have no right to tell who to retire.

If you love something, then have this be your call to say do it. Don't settle for anything less than what you love to do.

By the way, these fighters you will know, I did not search for fighters with 10 fights and 10 losses, which they need to retire but the fighters on this list are legends of the sport.

Also, if any of these fighters have already called it quits if you would tell me, then I could take them off the list or at least I have been corrected. Thank you.

10. Randy Couture (19-10)

1 of 10

Couture is a veteran of the game and is still motivated to get yet another shot at the title.

However, he has been knocked out six times and have been rocked more than that.

He has been hit with tons of shots to the head, and has taken several beatings in his day. Couture only has 29 fights, and has lost 10 of those fights.

Randy has been hit by Chuck Liddell, Brock Lesnar, and Josh Barnett. From a medical standpoint, one or two more fights should be the end.

Although, as long as Randy is healthy, even at the age of 47, he will continue to fight.

From the rankings standpoint he very well could be in the top five, but against top competition, he seems irrelevant.

9. Wanderlei Silva (34-10-1 1NC)

2 of 10

If anyone has taken as many shots in MMA, it is Wanderlei Silva. If anyone is to walk away from the sport with injuries that will last for life, it's Silva.

Wandy has been knocked out by Dan Henderson, Cro Cop, and "Rampage" all in intense fashion.

Also there was the amazing fight between Silva and Liddell where both fighters were dealt intense punishment.

Silva has also lost five of his last seven fights. However, he fell short to Liddell, Franklin, Jackson, Henderson, and Cro Cop.

So he has not been the most competitive fighter as far as winning fights. Although, he does put on fights every time he steps inside to fight in MMA anywhere.

Once again, from a medical standpoint and a winning standpoint, retirement could be in the near future.

8. Andrei Arlovski (15-8)

3 of 10

Was at one time the top heavyweight in the UFC, but has also been put to sleep six times out of his eight losses.

Arlovski has lost his last three fights and two of them by devastating knock out.

Arlovski, even at the age 31, has lost a lot of steam in MMA. He has been falling short more frequently and is no more competitive in the UFC nor Strikeforce.

Andrei is not considering retirement as far as I know. Actually, I have heard that he has been asking for another fight in Strikeforce.

Arlovski has been taking shots for a while and seems like MMA is no longer where his calling is.

7. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira 32-6-1 1NC)

4 of 10

Nogueira was known for getting knocked down and coming back and winning the fight.

Then he was finished by Mir and then again by Velasquez. This proves to me that retirement is just around the corner.

Although the man has expressed interest in continuing to compete, and is in a lot of the top five UFC Heavyweight rankings, he just doesn't seem to have that chin that keeps him awake and fighting back.

Nogueira has only been knocked out twice in his career; both were in his last three fights. Nogueira is not too old compared to some at just 34 years of age, although he looks like he is around 40 years old.

Nogueira has been rocked in several fights and has been knocked down on frequent occasions.

Taking all those shots in his past could lead to a retirement in another year or two.

6. Tito Ortiz (15-7-1)

5 of 10

It's not that Tito has took a lot of punches, because he has been beaten up but never taken tons of shots. He's not one that I would think of having bad medical conditions later in his life.

He is not too old to compete neither at the ripe age of 35. The main condition for him is it just doesn't seem like he can compete with anyone anymore, or should I say, he doesn't seem to be motivated to compete.

In the last Forrest fight, he completely tired out in the third round and lost the fight.

Tito has been finished four times in his career, and TKO'd twice by Chuck Liddell. He hasn't won a fight since October 2006, although he has had surgery on his back which is not good for his MMA status.

Tito is 0-3-1 in his last four fights, losing to Chuck, Forrest, and Machida.

Tito is obviously not ready to hang the gloves up yet, as he is currently signed to take on friend Matt Hamill at UFC 121.

With his losses continuing to pop up, a retirement could be very soon for the this former champion.

5. Chuck Liddell (21-8)

6 of 10

One of the most beloved strikers in mma history, and holds some of the most impressive knockouts in the history of mma. However Chuck's highlight reel has became everyone else's highlight reel. Liddell has lost five or his last six and four of those losses came by devestating knockout.

Liddell has been contemplating retirement for sometime now. Although his last fight against Rich Franklin he fought better than he had since the Silva fight, and could have been in the best shape of his life. Rich Franklin knocked him out at the end of the first round, and could have ended his career. You just can't help but think how many more shots can Chuck take before he is finished for sure.

4. Mark Coleman (16-10)

7 of 10

Coleman is one of those fighters that just cannot compete with the best fighters in the world. Really he just can't compete with anyone anymore. He had one of the worst mma performances I have ever seen in my life when he fought Randy Couture. Coleman has lost three of his last four all to top competition, but it's the loss to Randy that for me punctuates his career.

Mark still wants to compete in mma, but don't expect to see his name in lights any longer. He just don't have it anymore.

3. Frank Trigg (19-8)

8 of 10

This man has the same problem as Coleman for me. He was once a great fighter, but can no longer compete at the top any longer. Trigg lost to Robbie Lawler back in 2007 then won four straight fights. The UFC got word of it and decided to bring him back. He fought Josh Koscheck and was tko's in the very first round. Then received yet another fight against Matt Serra and was once again knocked out in the very first round.

Trigg plans on competing still as far as I know, but just like Coleman I don't expect to see him defeat any top fighters any more.

2. Jens Pulver (22-14-1)

9 of 10

Yet another prime example of someone who cannot compete any longer. He has just been getting taken down and submitted in no time. One of the most loved fighters in the history of mma just doesn't seem to have the skill to defend against these young lions who are taking him out. Pulver has lost eight of his last nine fights. You really can't get much worse than that. His last five fights he was finished in the first round every time.

Pulver has a lot of emotional interviews after his defeats, but I seem to think he has fought for the last time. Pulver could come back and fight I do not know, but retirement is imminent.

1. Ken Shamrock (27-14-2)

10 of 10

The only difference between Shamrock and Pulver is Shamrock is losing to nobody fighters. Shamrock has lost six of his last seven and eight of his last ten. Six of the fights he has lost since 2005 have all came in the first round. Amongst those defeats he was knocked out in the first round to Robert Barry. A 12-9 fighter who just isn't good enough to defeat a legend like Ken. This proves to me that Shamrock just does not have it anymore to compete in this sport.

I have not heard much out of Shamrock recently, but for some reason I think he will continue to fight.
