2010 College Football Week Three: My Power Top 25 Rankings
After yet another thrilling week of college football, things seem to have shaken up yet again. Oklahoma, Alabama, and Ohio State emerged among the dominant teams, while others like Virginia Tech, Florida State, and Georgia Tech (notice a coincidence?), struggled. Here's my first edition of the Top 25 Power Poll.
#25: Air Force Falcons
1 of 25
Last Week: 35-14 Win vs. Brigham Young
This Week: at #7 Oklahoma
Air Force's offense, led by star running back Asher Clark, has been dynamic, especially last week as they dismantled a historically strong BYU team in MWC conference play. Right now, the Falcons look to be the best of the three military academies, especially after Navy's recent loss to Maryland.
#24: Fresno State Bulldogs
2 of 25
Last Week: Idle
This Week: at Utah State
Despite losing superstar RB Ryan Mathews to the San Diego Chargers, the Bulldogs look to contend with Boise State after a nice 28-14 win over Cincinnati in week one.
#23: Georgia Bulldogs
3 of 25
Last Week: 6-17 Loss at #24 South Carolina
This Week: vs. #12 Arkansas
Remember, the Bulldogs are playing without their best player, WR A.J. Green, who is sitting out with a disciplinary issue from the NCAA. They put up a tough fight in Columbia this week against a very strong Gamecocks team.
#22: Oregon State Beavers
4 of 25
This Week: Idle
Last Week: vs. Louisville
Oregon State is coming off of a tough week one loss against a good TCU team, but looks to rebound against Louisville and Boise State in upcoming weeks. This team is a dynamic one led by RB Jacquizz Rodgers.
#21: Houston Cougars
5 of 25
Last Week: 54-24 Win vs. UTEP
This Week: at UCLA
This team can score, and it's not just superstar QB Case Keenum that runs the offense. RB Bryce Beall led the way against UTEP on Thursday, with 195 yards rushing and 3 TD's.
#20: Arizona Wildcats
6 of 25
Last Week: 52-6 Win over The Citadel
This Week: vs. #9 Iowa
Despite all of the hype of Matt Barkley, Jake Locker, and Andrew Luck, Arizona QB Nick Foles has emerged as an elite QB in the Pac-10 conference. That being said, it will be interesting to see what this Wildcats team can do against an aggressive Iowa defense, as opposed to Toledo or The Citadel.
#19: Florida Gators
7 of 25
Last Week: 38-14 win over South Florida
This Week: at Tennessee
John Brantley is certainly not the same player that Tim Tebow was for the Gators and he has struggled to get into any groove so far this season. The way the Big East has performed this season, a 38-14 win over USF (which was much closer than the score), is not as impressive as it may sound. Tennessee may give them a better fight this weekend.
#18: Miami (FL) Hurricanes
8 of 25
Last Week: 24-36 loss at #2 Ohio State
This Week: at Pittsburgh
It really doesn't matter if your playing Ohio State or Ohio Wesleyan, throwing four interceptions in a game usually means you aren't going to win. That's just what Jacory Harris did this week against the #2 team in the country. They will have a very hard time in Pittsburgh if he doesn't improve, but may still be the favorite in a weak ACC.
#17: Louisiana State Tigers
9 of 25
Last Week: 27-3 win at Vanderbilt
This Week: vs. Mississippi State
LSU was impressive this weekend, but did it against a very weak team from Nashville. That week one near collapse against a depleted North Carolina team still gives me my doubts for this team, especially in the incredibly strong SEC West.
#16: Michigan Wolverines
10 of 25
Last Week: 28-24 Win at Notre Dame
This Week: vs. Massachusetts
Michigan still has some weaknesses especially in their secondary, and may have lost had it not been a strange injury to Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist, but beating the Irish in South Bend is always difficult and Denard Robinson hasn't done anything wrong yet this year.
#15: Stanford Cardinals
11 of 25
Last Week: 35-0 Win at UCLA
This Week: vs. Wake Forest
Stanford really hasn't been tested yet this year against Sacramento State and a weak team from UCLA, but they also haven't made anything interesting. Look once again for Andrew Luck to eliminate any doubts against a much inferior Wake Forest team on Saturday.
#14: Auburn Tigers
12 of 25
Last Week: 17-14 win at Mississippi State
This Week: vs. Clemson
Auburn wasn't all too impressive Thursday night, but anytime you beat another SEC team on the road it is an accomplishment. The Tigers look to contend with Alabama and Arkansas in the very strong SEC West, led by QB Cameron Newton and WR Darvin Adams.
#13: Utah Utes
13 of 25
Last Week: 38-10 Win vs. UNLV
This Week: at New Mexico
Jordan Wynn's availability is in question after injuring his thumb in Saturday's win, but the running back combo of Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata should be enough to get by a very weak New Mexico Lobos team. In order for the Utes to be an elite team, though, they need a healthy Wynn, who is one of the best QBs in the MWC.
#12: Arkansas Razorbacks
14 of 25
Last Week: 31-7 Win vs. Louisiana-Monroe
This Week: at Georgia
Ryan Mallett may be the best pure skilled QB in the country, and has already thrown for over 700 yards and 6 TD's against two cupcakes in the first two weeks. The Razorbacks will be put to the test Saturday, as SEC play begins against a strong Georgia Bulldogs team.
#11: South Carolina Gamecocks
15 of 25
Last Week: 17-6 Win vs. #22 Georgia
This Week: vs. Furman
Marcus Lattimore has emerged not only as one of the best freshmen in the country, but possibly one of the best RBs in the SEC East. He could be the spark that leads South Carolina into the SEC title game for the first time.
#10: Iowa Hawkeyes
16 of 25
Last Week: 35-7 win vs. Iowa State
This Week: at #24 Arizona
Iowa was the surprise team in the always strong Big-10 last year, but won't be able to take anyone by surprise this year. They've looked dominant thus far against inferior opponents from Eastern Illinois and Iowa State.
#9: Nebraska Cornhuskers
17 of 25
Last Week: 38-17 Win vs. Idaho
This Week: at Washington
Taylor Martinez and Roy Helu Jr. have formed a dynamic rushing attack for the rejuvenated Huskers in their last season in the Big 12. They will have a challenge in store for them next week, though, as they head to Seattle to play Jake Locker and the Huskies.
#8: Wisconsin Badgers
18 of 25
Last Week: 27-14 win vs. San Jose State
This Week: vs. Arizona State
I'm really high on this Wisconsin team despite a lackluster performance against SJSU last Saturday. John Clay is among the elite RBs in the Big 10, and Nick Toon, who was injured last week, and Scott Tolzein form a very solid passing game as well.
#7: Boise State Broncos
19 of 25
Last Week: Idle
This Week: at Wyoming
The worst thing possible that could have happened to the Broncos happened Saturday when Virginia Tech lost to James Madison. Now they need to beat Oregon State handily in a few weeks in order to have any chance to beat out a one-loss team from a big conference for a national championship birth.
#6: Texas Christian Horned Frogs
20 of 25
Last Week: 62-7 Win vs. Tennessee Tech
This Week: vs. Baylor
TCU has looked excellent thus far this year, beating a very good Oregon State team before destroying a poor FCS opponent in Tennessee Tech. After the Virginia Tech loss, they may appear to be the best team in a non BCS conference, passing out Boise State.
#5: Texas Longhorns
21 of 25
Last Week: 34-7 Win vs. Wyoming
This Week: at Texas Tech
The Longhorns have looked solid so far, despite some learning curves from new QB Garrett Gilbert. Cody Johnson and Fozzie Whittaker have emerged as a very solid running duo to make it easier on Gilbert, who has potential to become one of the best.
#4: Oklahoma Sooners
22 of 25
Last Week: 47-17 Win vs. Florida State
This Week: vs. Air Force
The Sooners erased just about any doubts people had after their tight win against Utah State, by absolutely dismantling a solid Christian Ponder-led Florida State team. DeMarco Murray could become a Heisman contender, as he is one of the most talented backs in the country.
#3: Oregon Ducks
23 of 25
Last Week: 48-13 Win at Tennessee
This Week: vs. Portland State
If Tennessee and New Mexico showed so much difficulty stopping the running games of LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner, I can only imagine how FCS opponent Portland State is going to fare. Judging on last week Oregon is a legit Title contender, and James is a legit Heisman contender, end of story.
#2: Ohio State Buckeyes
24 of 25
Last Week: 36-24 win vs. #12 Miami (FL)
This Week: vs. Ohio
The dominant Buckeyes will get a break this weekend with Ohio, after challenging themselves against a very good Miami Hurricane team. The defense did a great job pressuring Jacory Harris into 4 INTs, and Terrelle Pryor, for the most part, showed why he is one of the most dynamic QBs in college football.
#1: Alabama Crimson Tide
25 of 25
Last Week: 24-3 win vs. Penn State
This Week: at Duke
The Crimson Tide are still the team to beat, despite still not having Mark Ingram, after a convincing win against Penn State. An upcoming stretch of at Arkansas, vs. Florida, and at South Carolina could prove to be trouble for the Tide, who look to double up on their undefeated season a year ago.
