High School Football Game of the Week: Don Bosco Dominates Gilman 33-6
This season looked to be a year when Don Bosco Prep of Ramsey, New Jersey would take a step back from the national scene after the Ironmen ran the table and finished No. 1 in the country last year.
Sure, they were still probably going to be the most talented team in New Jersey, but they weren’t expected to be one of the elite teams in the country again considering they lost sensational running back Tony Jones, a Colorado signee, as well as a few other key players.
Last night at Morgan State’s Hughes Stadium, it seemed the boys from Bosco didn’t get the message that they couldn’t compete with the nation’s best, as they ran up and down the field on No. 14 Gilman School of Baltimore, Maryland.
Bosco running back Paul Canevari was the star of the show, rushing for 321 yards on 22 carries in the 33-6 dominating victory. The 6‘0" 220 lb. senior broke off runs of 58, 65, and 97 yards.
Quarterback Gary Nova, a Pittsburgh commit, also looked solid by going 12 for 17 for 120 yards and a TD.
The Don Bosco offense as a whole totaled 508 yards.
Gilman, on the other hand, was not nearly as successful on the offensive side of the ball. The Greyhounds could only come up with 63 yards in the first half and ended up finishing with just 233 yards for the game.
Quarterback Darius Jennings, who was the key player in Gilman’s upset of nationally ranked Good Counsel of Olney, Maryland a week ago, finished with 105 yards on 24 carries. Jennings is considered to be one of the top standout recruits in the nation. The highly athletic senior star has been offered by schools such as Ohio State, Penn State, UCLA, Virginia Tech, and Pittsburgh.
Gilman finally broke the shutout with a short touchdown run from backup quarterback Max Greene in the waning minutes of the game.
The win starts the season off on the right note for Don Bosco, as they now move to 1-0 and likely move into USA Today’s Top 25 national rankings. They will take on Ridgewood High School (Ridgewood, NJ) next weekend before two tough tests against St. Ignatius Prep (Cleveland, OH) and Bergen Catholic High School (Oradell, NJ).
The victory keeps Don Bosco’s winning streak alive at 24.
Gilman drops to 2-1 on the year and will try and regroup for a battle with the DeMatha Stags of Hyatsville, Maryland next weekend.
