Power Ranking the Worst Dressed Coaches in Sports History

Tom KinslowSep 10, 2010

Sports coaches are trained to be leaders of men, expert strategists at their sport and critical thinkers. No one ever said they were great dressers.

When coaches and fashion combine, sometimes it's an ugly, horrific, hilarious combination that just makes you wonder what these people were thinking when they put that outfit on. Don't get me wrong, some of them can class it up with the best of us, but some just have no clue.

With that in mind, here's the top 10 worst dressed coaches in the history of sports.

No. 10: Bob Knight

Bob Knight is one of the greatest minds to ever coach a basketball team. However, his choice in wardrobe leaves a little to be desired.

If you're going to demand excellence from your players, you might want to put the same effort into your clothes. I know he's an intimidating guy and that he's one of the more ominous figures in the history of sports, but c'mon, a grandpa sweater? Really?

I don't know what I'd do if I saw him in a suit. I might faint from shock.  At one point, Knight even had a sponsorship on the sweater. Shameless.

No. 9: Terry Francona

I know that baseball managers have to dress in the uniform but Terry Francona takes a Casual Friday approach to every game.

When he wears that pullover (or one of the other variations of the pullover) he doesn't even look like a manager. He could be a clubhouse guy for all I know or a trainer. There's nothing to distinguish him from anyone else on that coaching staff. Give me a number or something.

Maybe it just helps relax him and help him forget that he's coaching in one of the biggest pressure markets in baseball.

No. 8: Barry Melrose

3 of 10

Don't forget about hair when judging badly dressed coaches. While it may have been one of the more spectacular mullets ever, it was still no way for a coach to be walking around.

That's something that's cool for your players to be doing, not a coach. Melrose's suits are always fun too, especially when he breaks out the pinstripes like he's a 1950s mobster. I honestly think Melrose thought every game was an audition to be in the Godfather.

Great hair, but man what a bad decision.

No. 7: Stan Van Gundy

Stan, I'm begging you. Please just get a dress shirt and a tie.

You're the head coach of an NBA franchise, just for the love of all that's holy, dress like it. The worst part is, even making the NBA finals didn't stop you from dressing like this. It's like you're allergic to ties. I know your brother Jeff isn't the best looking guy, but at least he can throw on a suit.

Matt Barnes should make that face every time you wear that to the arena.

No. 6: Don Nelson

Another NBA coach who just can't class it up for game days. It's a little more expected with Nellie but it's still just as funny/sad if not more so.

The best part is when Nellie eventually loses his mind. His gut hangs out below the undershirt, his hair gets all messed up and he looks like he's going to either faint of exhaustion and frustration or throw a chair. He pretty much is the embodiment of the Golden State Warriors.

We love you Nellie.

No. 5: Alvin Wyatt

6 of 10

Oh Alvin. I know you're not coaching a major college football team but this isn't College Football Two: Electric Boogaloo.

The belt buckle is by far the best part of the outfit. Is that urban cowboy you're going for there? I see you Alvin. I see you. Also, you're coaching in Florida, I'm pretty sure all black is probably the worst possible choice for an outfit in that weather.

I'm either stunned he's able to breathe wearing that or just respectful of the swag he's exhibiting wearing it in the heat.

No. 4: Sidney Lowe

7 of 10

Nothing says school spirit like a bright red blazer on the sidelines. I know NC State hasn't been exactly the national star that it has been at times in its history, but there's better ways to attract attention to your team than this.

Also, how much does a red blazer cost and how many times can you really wear it? I didn't even know you could get a red blazer. All of this is so confusing. Either way, that is one ugly blazer and there is no defending it.

No. 3: Bruce Pearl

8 of 10

The innovator of the school color themed blazer had to make our list. It's a little bit easier to wear this when your team is playing and you want to take some attention off them but the matching tie is just awesome.

I'd love to be the guy who sold that duo to him. He must have felt like he was stealing money. I'm sure his wife is so, so proud of her husband when he leaves the house wearing that.

Leave the costumes to the student section Bruce.

No. 2: Rick Pitino

9 of 10

I didn't know Louisville was holding Miami Vice nights at its basketball games now. Slick Rick busting out the all white trying to style and profile on the sideline.

Rick's a flashy guy and he's always been in the headlines. Sometimes quicker than others. Pitino should be used to that. Or so I'm told.

No. 1: Bill Belichick

10 of 10

You knew it was coming. The Hoodie himself is the top spot on this list. Have you ever, ever seen a coach that walked out and you thought he was homeless?

I know I didn't until I saw Belichick. I wonder if he just has a closet full of them. I like how he had to have the hoodie personalized with his initials so people didn't pick it up.

Who's really going to take his hoodie? A better question is, who would want his hoodie? That thing has to be all sorts of disgusting at this point.
