College Football Recruiting: Top RB Recruit Savon Huggins Narrows To Five
Savon Huggins is undoubtedly one of the top running back prospects in the 2011 recruiting class. Huggins, who plays for St. Peters Prep in Jersey City, New Jersey, has been rated as one of the top ten players at the position by both Rivals and Scout.
The 6‘0 200 lb. back offers colleges a nice blend of speed, power, and vision. As a junior, Huggins rushed for over 1,500 yards on 211 carries and scored 22 TDs.
Huggins’ goal was to narrow his schools down to five by the time the season started, and with St. Peters getting ready to take on St. Joes Prep of Pennsylvania this Saturday at Rutgers, he's reportedly done just that.
Here’s a look at the five schools Savon will be choosing from.
Rutgers
1 of 5
Rutgers has been recruiting Savon since his freshman year of high school.
Head Coach Greg Schiano has the advantage of being the only major college football program in a state that is surprisingly deep with talent. He can play the “come play in front of your friends and family” card that no other school can.
With the exception of offensive lineman Anthony Davis out of Piscataway, Schiano has usually failed at landing New Jersey’s A-listers in the past.
Florida

Savon would be an intriguing fit in Urban Meyer’s offensive system.
Huggins isn’t the smaller scat back type player like Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey.
He is instead more of a straight ahead Emmanuel Moody type of back.
Huggins has expressed some concern over Florida’s opening game offensive struggles, but he also expressed his comfort with the coaching staff, most notably offensive coordinator Steve Addazio.
He knows he will have more competition for early playing time at a school like Florida, but the Gators can offer a recruit a lot of things that others teams just can’t.
North Carolina
3 of 5
North Carolina has received some negative press lately with all of the suspension and eligibility issues lurking, but when you factor that out for the a minute, you'll realize that Butch Davis is building a very strong program down in Chapel Hill.
The coach has been bringing in a lot of talented young recruits, who have already started to pay dividends on the field.
Huggins surely has aspirations to play in the NFL one day, and all Davis has to do is point to his days of turning the Miami program into a temporary pro producing football factory to show off his credibility.
Pittsburgh
4 of 5
Pittsburgh has been producing some notable running back names in recent years. It started with LeSean McCoy, and it’s continued with Dion Lewis.
Savon’s running style fits in perfectly with their offensive scheme, and the school plays in the Big East, which means Savon’s family will be able to travel to a good amount of his games during the season.
Dave Wannstedt hasn't shown he can win a Big East championship just yet, but he has shown that he can recruit on a championship type level. The coach has consistently brought in some of the conference's top classes in recent years.
Notre Dame
5 of 5
Brian Kelly is starting to restore the structure of the Notre Dame football program and you can bet Savon has taken notice.
The school’s prestige and tradition still stands out out to today’s high school recruits.
Add into that the fact that Coach Kelly is revitalizing the offense, and actually showing that he enjoys running the ball (36 rushing attempts against Purdue), and you have a very desirable situation for a top running back recruit.
Senior starter Armando Allen will be gone after this year, but Savon would likely have to compete for carries with Cierre Wood, who is just a redshirt freshman.
