College Football's Week 2 Picks Not for Betting Purposes: Top Games and Pac-10
Now that a week of college football is under our belts, every single person who is a fan of Saturday pigskin now considers himself an expert. Since I am no different, my good friend Trevor Sojka and I have decided to make our weekly picks on the top 10 games of the week as well as the Pac-10 games.
Feel free to argue, agree, call us idiots (Sojka is a UCLA fan after all) or say what you want. We'll be back each week until Boise State's opponent in the BCS National Title Game is named.
Games of the Week:
Georgia vs. South Carolina
Trevor Sojka - AJ Green is out, the Ol’ Ball Coach has the Gamecocks looking good, and at home, South Carolina is going to be tough to beat. Carolina finally tops the Bulldogs after so many close losses in the last few years
Patrick Hamblin - The chances of me buying a $1000 Independence Bowl worn AJ Green jersey are about as slim as Georgia beating the Gamecocks. Stephen Garcia looks like he has finally arrived and Steve Spurrier may actually compete for the SEC title.
Spread: South Carolina -2.5
Pick: South Carolina
Michigan vs. Notre Dame
TS - A meeting of two teams that play into each other’s weaknesses, Wolverines want to be on the field while Brian Kelly’s Irish offense wants to be off it. That will lead to Michigan with a big win early in the season, though no one really knows how good these two teams really are.
PH - You gotta love the arrogance of Michigan fans and alumni who aren't happy with Rich Rodriguez. RichRod's got his Pat White-type quarterback in Denard Robinson and his defense is used to practicing against Brian Kelly's system.
Spread: Notre Dame -4.0
Pick: Michigan
Florida State at Oklahoma
TS: If last week was any indication this could be a classic, Seminole’s putting up points and the Sooners surrendering them to lousy teams? I pick upset here, Nole’s win with more offense, as neither defense does much.
PH: Everyone wants to jump on Bob Stoops' boys after struggling with Utah St. Doesn't anyone think that just maybe the Sooners were looking ahead to the Seminoles?
Spread: Oklahoma -8.5
Pick: TS - Florida State PH - Oklahoma
Miami at Ohio State
TS: My heart says Hurricanes, my head says Buckeyes. I have to go with my head here, but I hope my heart wins. Ohio St. doesn’t lose close games at home, unless they are playing a team ranked ahead of them, which Miami isn’t. Pryor does enough not to lose, Buckeyes win.
PH: The Hurricanes do not face a defense like Ohio St. in the ACC. Playing in the Horseshoe is a difficult proposition and can someone tell me a big win that proves the 'Canes are back? Many point to Florida St. last year but you have to do better than that. Jacory Harris is good, but not a Heisman candidate...yet.
Pick: TS - Ohio State PH - Miami (Ohio St. wins the game but Miami covers)
Penn State at Alabama
TS: Can a freshman quarterback lead any offense into Tuscaloosa and beat a Saban defense? No, but can a Paterno coached quarterback pull it off? Still no, however, it will be close game until Alabama pulls away late, Tide win 35-17.
PH: Alabama's speed will make freshman quarterback Robert Bolden feel as if he is standing on the autobahn after driving on the autopia (Youngstown St.) last week. The Nittany Lions do not have the personnel to keep up with the Tide but the Big Ten has a nasty habit of beating those so-called invincible SEC teams. Still, Tide rolls
Spread: Alabama -11.5
Pick: Alabama
Pac-10 Games
Pac-10 Game of the Week - Stanford at UCLA
TS: No way does UCLA make the mistakes it made in its opening week loss, and Stanford won’t find the Bruin defense as soft as last weeks. With that, I think Bruins jump out early on emotion and hold on in the end.
PH: It will be very interesting to see how Cardinal QB Andrew Luck, sans Toby Gerhart, matches up with what is probably the best secondary in the Pac-10. The problem for UCLA is its inconsistency on offense and an offensive line that offers less protection than the Maginot Line.
Pick: TS - UCLA PH - Stanford
Virginia at USC
TS: The Cavaliers taking on the Trojans in the Coliseum? USC can still trot out a high school-eque defense and dominate this matchup, offense takes care of business while defense turns it up this week.
PH: Virginia has not traveled this far to face an opponent since Gettysburg. The Cavaliers will not fair any better in this one either as USC's defense gets to face a pro-style offense instead of one of those evil spread offenses. Look for Dillon Baxter to make an opening statement on his career.
Spread: USC -18.5
Pick: USC
Oregon at Tennessee
TS: The Ducks are on a roll, more specifically the offense is on a roll and a massive SEC crowd isn’t going to stop it. Neither is an inexperienced Volunteer team, Ducks smash Tennessee.
PH: Oregon, minus star running back LaMichael James, rolled over New Mexico. Chip Kelly's team will have struggle early, but win big in the end. Key point to remember, Vol's defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox is the architect of the defense Boise St. used to beat Oregon last year, that was copied by Ohio St. in the Rose Bowl. He just won't have the horses to compete.
Pick: Oregon
Colorado at Cal
TS: This might be a good Buffalo team, and this matchup will be become much more regular with the Pac-12, but this week its another out of conference game that the Bears win.
PH: Whether its in the Big 12 or the Pac-10, this is Division I football brother. Colorado struggles with running teams and Cal has one of the nation's best backs in Shane Vereen. Look for him, and the Golden Bears to have a big game.
Spread: Cal -8.5
Pick: Cal
Syracuse at Washington
TS: If the Huskies play anything like they did last week, the Orange could pull an upset. Fortunately for Pac-10 fans they won’t, Washington wins 31-14 and Locker starts living up to the hype.
PH: Jake Locker will prove why Mel Kiper hypes him so much. The Husky defense is still a problem, though it will not matter against an improved Orange.
Spread: Washington -12.5
Pick: Washington
The Citadel at Arizona
TS: This game could get ugly, and it could happen fast. I take that back, it will get ugly and will be fast, Wildcats win big.
PH: The Citadel takes a break from being on some SEC team's path to the championship to come west and get whacked. Expect Arizona, behind the throwing of Nick Foles and the heartlessness of a Stoops (Mike) to score upward of 50.
Spread: Off the board
Pick: Arizona
Northern Arizona at Arizona State
TS: Sun Devils win, how they do it, I’m not totally sure, but they will pull it off.
PH: I cannot name one player on NAU and since probably none of you can either, taking the Sun Devils here is easy.
Spread: Off the board
Pick: Arizona State
Montana State at Washington State
TS: Hardest game of the week to pick, will the Cougars score more than 14? Can they actually win a game? I say they do, and they eek it out.
PH: Look for the Cougs to come out fired up knowing they can actually win a game. They should, but this one is definitely one of the lowlights of the week.
Spread: Off the board (because no one cares)
Pick: Washington State.
