Week One Preview: Dallas Cowboys Vs. Washington Redskins.

Derek MajorSep 10, 2010

The Cowboys and Redskins get together this weekend to finish off the first Sunday of NFL action.

Redskins: They have a new coach, new quarterback, and a new running back tandem, which leaves the league to wonder if the Redskins can be successful this season, as most of their training camp and preseason has been the Albert Haynesworth vs. Mike Shanahan show.

Donovan Mcnabb will try to exorcise the ghosts that haunted him last season in the Cowboys front seven, who dominated McNabb in three games. McNabb has some new options around him including backup running back Larry Johnson, who comes to Washington after spending last season split between Kansas City and Cincinnati.

Johnson, along with Clinton Portis will try to revive a running game that was 27th in the league last season and had a ton of injuries. Portis is expected to start while Johnson will come in to be the bruiser late in games.

Shanahan doesn't quite have the personnel for the zone blocking scheme he ran in Denver, but expect the Redskins to run the ball quite a bit on Sunday night if the game is close.

McNabb was blessed last year with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. In Washington he will be throwing to Santana Moss(70 catches, 908 yards and three TDs) and Joey Galloway, who still wants to prove he can stretch a defense at 38.

The biggest threats in Washington's passing game are tight ends Chris Cooley, who was injured for most of last season and Fred Davis (48 catches, 509 yards and 6 TDs) who was one of the few bright spots for the Redskins last season.

The Redskins defense has switched over to a 3-4, but most of the news the switch has made is Haynesworth's conditioning and inability to conform to the defense.

While the Redskins have said that he will be with the team on Sunday, it's unclear if Haynesworth will see quality minutes. Right now Makke Kemoeatu is on the top of the Redskins depth chart at Defensive Tackle, but he's more of a run stopper than a pass rusher.

The Redskins will try to stuff the Cowboys run game and put them in third and long situations, where they can attack.

If that happens expect a lot of blitzing from the edges where the Skins will try to take advantage of the Cowboys offensive line backups Alex Barron and Montrae Holland, but they have to get there because the Cowboys receivers are great at getting open and stretching the field and Tony Romo loves to move around in the pocket.

Brian Okrakpo and Andre Carter will be vital to the Redskins blitz packages.

DeAngelo Hall and Carlos Rodgers are expected to play much more aggressively this season as the days of the Redskins cover two scheme are gone. LaRon Landry will play much closer to the line this season in order to throw himself around in the running game where he's most effective.

Cowboys: Dallas comes into this game with questions about their offense after an unproductive preseason.

Felix Jones and Marion Barber can't wait to get some real game action, after being limited for most of the preseason. The Cowboys ran the most draw plays in the league by a large margin and expect them to run it a lot Sunday as they'll want their huge offensive line to get up on the Redskins linebackers.

Tony Romo will want to start the Cowboys off fast and cast doubt in the Redskins new defense. It will also help if Holland and Barron can hold up early in the game.

The Cowboys could move Romo around in order to throw off the Redskins blitz, and to help Barron and Holland, but it's a better chance they'll hold the backs in to help to start.

The Cowboys will try to use three receiver sets to keep the Skins from doubling Miles Austin (81 receptions, 1320 yards 11 TDs) who should be excited since signing his new contract. Austin could be moved into the slot during those situations giving Dez Bryant and Roy Williams the outside since they're bigger and more physical.

Defensively the Cowboys will want to confuse and blitz McNabb, especially with his bad ankle. However they need to stop the run first. The Cowboys gave up a lot of yards on the ground during the preseason, and having Marcus Spears back will be a big boost to the defensive line.

The Cowboys were great at stuffing the run last season and getting teams into third and long situations. If they can do that on Sunday, they'll be able to come after McNabb and not be worried about him leaving the pocket for a 20-yard gain.

The secondary will have to keep the Redskins from big gains, McNabb will most likely throw to his tight ends a lot and they'll have to stop Cooley and Davis from gaining yards after the catch. Terence Newman will most likely continue his rivalry with Santana Moss, as the last few times these teams matched up Newman went everywhere Moss went.

Fantasy Player: David Buehler. I know there are a lot of other players you could go with as a fantasy player to watch, but this will be Buehler's first game action as a placekicker. With the Cowboys potent offense, they'll see a ton of red zone opportunities and if Buehler can establish himself as a reliable kicker, he could provide you with a lot of points over the course of a season.

He's probably still available in your league so watch him over the first couple of weeks.
