Vitor Belfort Would Like To Meet James Toney in the Cage Under...Boxing Rules?
Looks like Randy Couture isn't the only guy that was willing to face James Toney in a fight.
Pro MMA Now reports that The Phenom, a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, would like to also face James Toney in a sanctioned bout, but he'd like to do so under boxing rules inside the cage.
Just so you know, that wasn't any type of error...he wants it under boxing rules, and inside the cage.
Vitor tweeted twice that he'd like it to be a reality for the fans to see.
The idea is that UFC President Dana White would have a change of heart, let James Toney have one more fight in the UFC, have Joe Silva make the fight be Toney vs. Belfort, and somehow make it so that the fight was more or less under boxing rules with six rounds as a limit.
That'd mean no takedowns, no kicks, no Muay Thai elbows or knees, and of course no submissions.
The fight would be, in MMA terms, a straight stand-up war, which is what I take it Vitor means to request.
On paper, we all have to be thinking, "Vitor, what the f**k are you thinking?!"
I mean, isn't a stand-up war what Toney wanted out of Couture?
Isn't Vitor's second official UFC fight since his return going to be a Middleweight bout against Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in Germany?
And probably most notable of all: Isn't Toney a little too heavy for Vitor?
Yes, yes, and yes to all three questions, and that's not going to change anytime soon with Toney.
Though he's trying his heart out to become a Mixed Martial Artist, it's out of the question about whether Toney will still want to trade with his opponents.
He will want to trade with his opponents no matter who they are or how famous they are for their knockouts.
He didn't get it out of Couture, but he never let us forget that he wanted to do that to Couture.
And of course, Toney did weigh in as something of a lighter-heavyweight in the Couture fight, which is heavier than any weigh than what Vitor has fought at.
But would that even be a factor if the two ever met?
I mean, when we talk about great fighters in MMA with the best boxing in the game, isn't Vitor's 45-second demolition of Wanderlei Silva one of the first things that comes to mind?
And hasn't Vitor done pretty well at weights heavier than 185 in the past?
So, if Vitor ever did face Toney in the cage, even if boxing rules didn't apply, who's to say Vitor couldn't knock Toney out as easily as Toney could knock Vitor out?
Remember, Vitor has KO'd the majority of the opponents he's faced in his career, and although he hasn't had but one fight in the ring, he's not too bad if he has to fight for a period of time with only his hands.
The way I see a potential "Toney vs. Vitor" fight is simple:
I see Toney and Vitor meeting at a catchweight in the cage, probably some weight between the MMA limits of light heavyweight and heavyweight.
What happens is Toney trashes MMA again and disses Vitor, but Vitor doesn't trash-talk.
The fight comes up and to every fan's shock and amazement, Vitor actually beats Toney with his own element.
He knocks Toney out with his own boxing, as I see it, but who knows?
Hey, if a guy can step in the cage with one Boxing glove on and fight, I'm inclined to believe that anything can happen...
...especially if that anything is James Toney getting KO'd by Vitor Belfort.
