Premier League Dream Team 2000- 2010: Goalkeeper Vote
With the success of the Liverpool team of the decade 2000 - 2010 article. I decided to go a bit broader and go for Premiership League Dream Team for the decade 2000 - 2010.
Everyone had an opinion on the last article I wrote with different views to mine, so I have decide to pick the readers brains and let them decide on each position for the dream team.
There will be a poll beside this article where readers will vote for the best goalkeeper in the last decade.
Here are the candidates for the goalkeeping position:
Pepe Reina (Liverpool)
The current Liverpool shotstopper ( 2005 - ) has amassed many plaudits for his consistent performances. A leader on the field Riena has broken many records at Liverpool and has a total of 126 clean sheets in all competitions.
Petr Cech(Chelsea)
Since his purchase in 2004 Chelsea have found a keeper which continues to impress in one of the meanest defensives in Europe. A twice golden gloves winner with Chelsea in 2004 and 2009, he has overseen many more trophies with the team.
An unfortunate accident with Stephen Hunt had forced Cech to wear a rugby style headband to protect his skull. This does not hamper the Czech keeper as he continues to rack up the trophies and plaudits at Chelsea.
David Seaman ( Arsenal)
With over 1000 appearances in professional football and 75 caps for England, the pony tailed keeper was a talisman for Arsene Wengers double winning side. With the flair of Henry, Wiltord and Bergkamp, you could be blamed for forgetting Seaman’s contribution.
A steady presence that seems to sorely be missing in the current Arsenal team.
Van De Sar ( Manchester Utd)
Since Schmeichel left Man Utd in 1999, Man Utd had struggled to find a suitable replacement. Even though Van De Sar was available in 2001, Ferguson bought Barthez so Fulham stepped in with a 7 million bid and got the dutch keepers services.
A few impressive seasons later, Ferguson finally bought the aging keeper for 2.5 million. It was an impressive bargain as Van De Sar has defied age and continued to guard the sticks with a towering presence.
Brad Friedel (Blackburn)
A purchase originally to sort Liverpool’s problems, the American disappointed and had only a handful of appearances. The American keeper was re-invented at Blackburn, were he was secured for a free transfer after some minor complications with his work permit.
Blackburn were promoted in 2000 and Friedel kept the team up for the coming years. In the 2002 - 2003 season, Friedel was selected in PFA team of the year.
Shay Given ( Newcastle)
A Geordie legend with over 500 appearances in the Premiership. The Irish keeper has twice been selected for the PFA team of the year and has many Man of the Match awards.
Current boss Roberto Mancini had described the Irish shot stopper as “one of the best 5 keepers in the world.” Unfortunately, the emergence of Joe Hart has lessened Given’s gaming time.
David James ( Portsmouth)
“Calamity” is not a word that should be describing an enterant to the list but in the past, David James had that tag over his head. After some soul searching David James begin reading sport psychology and the results improved his performances on the field.
James hold a record breaking 573 appearances in the Premier league and is considered to be one of the best of all time.
