Cricket: County Championship Division One Update

Joe WhitworthSep 4, 2010

Nottinghamshire's grip on the title wobbled, while Warwickshire boosted their survival hopes in the latest round of Division One action.

Nottinghamshire still lead the way on 202 points, winning seven, drawing three, and losing four after they lost to holders Durham by 210 runs at Chester-le-Street.

The home side made a strong 372 in their first innings, Phil Mustard making 120, while Andre Adams took 5-92.

Nottinghamshire replied with 343 thanks to the tail adding vital runs.

Durham continued to press for victory and declared at 361-6, as Gordon Muchall hit 111.

Potential champions Nottinghamshire needed 391 for victory but fell well short, being dismissed for 180, Steven Mullaney's 64 the only positive as Ben Harmison took 4-70.

Somerset stay second on 180 points, winning five, drawing seven, and losing two.

Yorkshire have 177 points, winning five, drawing eight, and losing one.

Lancashire move onto 171 points winning five, drawing seven, and losing two after winning a thriller against Hampshire.

Hampshire could only make 180 in their first innings, as Chris Wood top-scored with a first-class career best of 35.

Lancashire piled on the runs thanks to their lower order, Kyle Hogg hitting 81, as the Red Rose county made 398.

Hampshire fought to avoid defeat, epitomised by just over a 10-and-a-half hour knock of 194 from 508 balls by Jimmy Adams, helped by Lancashire skipper Glen Chapple being unable to bowl through injury.

The longest innings minutes and balls-wise this season, it included a partnership of 88 for the final wicket in more than 40 overs.

It left Lancashire needing 168 from 33 overs and after slipping to 44-4, they managed to reach their target with two balls and only three wickets to spare, thanks to Shivnarine Chanderpaul's 51.

Durham move to 159 points, winning five, drawing six, and losing three after their win over Nottinghamshire.

Warwickshire have 144 points, winning five, drawing one, and losing nine after they made it two wins on the spin by beating Kent by 95 runs.

Warwickshire recovered from 176-9 to post 294 thanks to Ant Botha (76) and Imran Tahir (69).

Kent fell to 111 all out, despite a last wicket partnership of 39, as Chris Woakes took 6-52.

The home side found themselves in trouble at 54-8 before the lower-order did the job again to post 140.

Kent battled hard second time around chasing an unlikely 324 for victory, they finally were dismissed for 228 with Martin van Jaarsveld left unbeaten on 110, while Woakes (5-45) and Neil Carter (5-60) shared five wickets each.

Hampshire slip outside the relegation zone on 133 points, winning two, drawing seven, and losing five after their narrow defeat against Lancashire.

Kent have 126 points, winning two, drawing six, and losing six after their defeat to Warwickshire.

Essex are bottom on 118 points, winning two, drawing seven, and losing six and need to win their final game to stand any chance of survival.

The next round of fixtures, September 7-10, sees key battles at both ends of the table in the penultimate games for most counties.

At the bottom end of the ladder, Essex face Durham while Kent host Hampshire.

At the top end Nottinghamshire play Yorkshire and Somerset host Lancashire.
