Should Dana White Add More Weight Classes to The UFC?
There's no denying that Dana White is one hell of a business man. His methods may be sometimes questionable, but his results are remarkable. White took over the company in 2001 and since then it has been growing in leaps and bounds. He has already brought the company from relative obscurity to the forefront of sports entertainment, what I'm wondering is if he's thought about making the company even bigger by adding more divisions. Four weight classes currently exist that UFC does not utilize: Featherweight (145lbs), Bantamweight (135lbs), Flyweight (125lbs) and Super Heavyweight (265lbs+). Other smaller organizations have these divisions in place, but the UFC does not. In fact, it was only a few years ago that the UFC didn't even have a Lightweight division. Personally, I would love to at least a couple of these divisions added to the UFC. Most of the time UFC cards are exciting and filled with good fights, but every once in a while they have to put on a lesser card and usually it's aired on Spike (example: Bisbing vs Akiyama, coming up in a couple months). With more weight divisions the UFC would have more elite fighters and they would be able to put on fights people wanted to see more consistently. Furthermore, if the UFC were to add all of these divisions there roster would eventually almost double. So, not only would their events be more consistent, they might be able to put on more every year. I don't know about the rest of you, but after about two weeks of no UFC action I start to get an itch that isn't scratched until the next event. Dana is always trying to squash lesser competition such as Strikeforce and WEC. By adding weight classes that these rival companies have Dana will have a better chance of stealing those companies main draws (examples: Jose Also and Urijah Faber). The only real risk I see in adding these divisions is the possibility of thinning out the divisions they already have. If they brought in the Featherweight division it is likely that Frankie Edgar, the current Lightweight champ, would go down to that class. Also, monsters like Carwin and Lesnar might bulk up a bit instead of having to cut weight all the time and try Super Heavyweight. However, the latter scenario seems unlikely because fighters usually want to compete at the lightest weight class possibly in order to have a maximum size advantage. Another thing we are starting to see in MMA but not in the UFC is women. No, I don't mean the cuties who parade around in between rounds (though more of those couldn't hurt anything, to be honest), I mean legitimate female mixed martial artists. Strikeforce now has a Women's division and although it is small right now there's no doubt more female fighters will be on their way quickly. However, Dana White has stated that he's not interested in having women in the UFC and I must say I can kind of see why. With so much of the UFC's fanbase being of the meat head variety I can't help but wonder if men would be watching the women go at it because they love the sport, or they love boobs (both?). The best move would probably be to wait a while and see how it turns out for Strikeforce before giving much thought to a Women's division. What do you guys think? Should the UFC expand by adding more weight classes and possibly another gender? Or do they have a good thing going right now that they shouldn't mess with?![]()
