Arsenal Defensive Dilemma: Does Squillaci Now Mean the End of Djourou?
Arsenal look to have completed their best signing of the summer so far, with news that Seville defender Sebastien Squillaci is set to arrive at the Emirates in the coming days. This news brings a flow of relief for Arsenal fans worldwide who were nervous about the lack of numbers and quality in the Arsenal backline.
Thankfully a renown experienced signing has been made, and it should see experience, leadership, and strength implemented into the raw talented Arsenal defence. Manager Arsene Wenger is renown for superb French signing (bar Mikael Silvestre), so fans can have high hopes for the oddly named French centre half.

But what does this signing now mean for the current Arsenal defenders?
One would have to expect Squillaci to join Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of the central defence, becoming the premier central options. The second signing of the summer, Laurent Koscienly, will be utilized in more of a cup sense in order to strengthen his development of the English game. The former Lorient FC back looks a promising prospect, but may need time to develop.
The question of Johan Djourou remains the biggest issue. What is to become of the injury prone Swiss? Djourou has been battling injury for some seasons that has seriously halted the 23-year-old's active growth.
The Swiss international is yet to make his début for the season and now with the added presence of Squillaci, Djourou could soon find himself out of favour and in no man's land. The former Birmingham loanee is a talented defender boasting much needed height and power as well as great control.
However his lack of recent experience ensures he is naturally a tad shaky when defending and may take some time before returning to his former self. But with youngsters like Harvard Nordtveit and Kyle Bartley looking very promising, and Alexandre Song moving closer to the backline everyday, Johan Djourou could cease to matter in the Arsenal backline.
