Baltimore Ravens Training Camp: Secondary Continues To Earn Confidence

Old AccountAug 23, 2010

With two weeks remaining until the Baltimore Ravens open the season against the New York Jets, you get the sense of confidence brewing around training camp to begin the week.

Today, as expected, Lardarius Webb was taken off the PUP list after passing his physical.

Many sources close to the Ravens felt both Webb and Fabien Washington would be ready for the early parts of the season, especially when the Ravens didn't go out and trade for a starting caliber cornerback.

Webb has said publicly he would not like to play in the final two preseason games, which hints of him being unlikely to open up in Week One against the Jets.

But there has to be a positive you can take out of this situation:

Fact: This is the best depth the Ravens have had at cornerback since Week 1 of last year.

The difference? With another year under Greg Mattison's defensive system, the Ravens are going to put pressure on the quarterback and challenge the starters they have at the moment.

Veterans Chris Carr and Travis Fisher have seen quite a bit of experience at the position and should hold their own for the first two games of the season.

After Week Three, we will likely see the combination of Webb, Washington, and Cary Williams, who is suspended for the first two games of the season.

Williams is the biggest key in the secondary to start off the season. He has shown his capability in being a turnover machine, having an interception on Saturday against the Washington Redskins.

From what I have seen, Williams has the potential to be on top of the depth chart by the end of the season.

His speed makes him a threat to cover any receiver in the league he faces this year, and he will have the upper head over the other two starters, who are more suited to cover the other options on the team.

Safeties Dawan Landry and Tom Zbikowski did show some weaknesses in Saturday's preseason game, leaving holes up the middle of the field for Donovan McNabb to work with.

Knowing John Harbaugh, these mistakes are going to be addressed in camp, and should be prepared to put the plays in action.

And, I will be one of the first journalists to say this, but don't rule out Ed Reed playing in Week One.

Though the signs don't look good, he hasn't been ruled out for any of the games yet. Reed is quite active on the sidelines, and has appeared at the first two preseason games for the Ravens.

I am sure that deep down in Reed's mind, he would love to face his friend Rex Ryan and the New York Jets.

The secondary is the question mark of the team in camp. But what can be said is how much more confidence the team has in this unit than they did a month ago.
