Arsenal Transfer Prospects: Should Wenger Target Wigan Young Gun Duo?
The Summer has been a slow, somewhat dull and frustrating time for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman was tirelessly working to secure several prime signatures to boost his sides title credentials. Arsenal have gone five seasons now without the rewarding presence of a trophy, which has forced Wenger to attempt to implement changes into his youthful squad.
The 60-year-old's main priority was finding a new keeper after current keepers Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski have been frail for some seasons now. Unfortunately, despite much effort, no deals have seemed to materialize despite rumours. It is growing increasingly likely that Arsenal will continue til January with the same shaky keeping options.

Another priority for Wenger was also the defensive department. Having let go Philippe Senderos, Sol Campbell, William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre, and Kerrea Gilbert, the Gunners were short on primary defensive options. Having snared Laurent Koscienly for £10 million from French outfit Lorient FC, Wenger is set to add one more defensive signing in the coming days, shaping up his backline.
The summer transfer window concludes in little over a week, giving Wenger a small yet vital opportunity to pounce on some quality prospects. One opportunity that has recently arose is the poor form of Wigan Athletic.
The Latics have galloped off to a horror start for their 2010/2011 campaign. Losing 4-0, at home, in their opening match of the season to newly promoted Blackpool, Roberto Martinez's men where then thumped 6-0 by Chelsea
. Ten goals in two games certainly would dampen spirits in Manchester which could provide Wenger with a possibility of snaring a talented player or two.
Wigan boast an exciting array of youngsters who overflow with promise and potential as well as being vastly experience. Should Wenger look at some of Wigan's talent?
1. James McCarthy
A standout performer in the Scottish League for Hamilton Academical before joining the Latics in 2009 for £1.2 million. Since joining Wigan, McCarthy has become one of the main focus points of the relatively dim Wigan attack, and he is only 19.
Blessed with great pace and balance, the Irish midfielder boast an incisive passing range, impressive creativity and a keen eye for goal. Having spent three seasons in the SPL and experiencing over 50 games for Wigan, McCarthy has enough games under his belt to surpass half the players in Arsenal side.
Undoubtedly Martinez would charge heavily for the Irish starlet but McCarthy is one of the most promising teenagers around and best of all for Wenger, he is still a teenager. With Cesc Fabregas likely to depart next season, moulding James McCarthy into the Arsenal captain would have the Gunners in a fair position.
2. Victor Moses
The 19-year-old striker arrived at the DW last winter from Crystal Palace in which he was a prominent figure in the Eagles side since making his début ion 2007. Moses has been impressive since joining the Premier League.
A versatile, pacey player who is capable of playing anywhere in the forward and midfield line. Blessed with a fierce shot and good strength for his size, the Englishman has a sparkling future in the EPL. Destined for national honours too, Wenger could do little wrong in attempting to persuade the Wigan sharpshooter to join the Emirates.
With so many forwards injury-prone, Moses would provide greater depth and injury security, as well as a boom option of the bench. Like McCarthy, Moses would cost a handful but it could easily be worth it.
So are these talented young prospects just what Arsenal need for the future?
