No Trial, Plenty of Error: Football Fans vs. LSU Tigers

Ron JohnsonDec 3, 2007

On any given day a computer can be your best friend.  There are also days when you want to pull an Office Space on the nearest piece of electronic equipment.

Several conferences are demanding a change in the guard as far as the way the BCS Championship is decided and, for the first time in its existence, I am protesting the BCS National Championship Game.

First, let's look at the candidates that should have been considered after this weekend's Championship Saturday.

Big 12 Conference

Out of the teams that grace the Big 12 Conference, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri emerged as title contenders during the final stretch. Despite suffering their only loss at the hands of the then-No. 1 team in the country, Kansas was bounced out of the Top Five. After suffering their first loss to Colorado, Oklahoma was also gone. And now, Missouri suffers the same fate after losing to Oklahoma once again this season.

Only this time there was more at stake.

Even though they beat the No. 1 team in the country, winning the Big 12 Championship in the process, Oklahoma is not heading to New Orleans to face Ohio State for the national title.

Are you kidding me? If you're going to put a two-loss team in the game, why not put Oklahoma? They had two losses and one was to an unranked team (Colorado). LSU had two losses, one to an unranked team (Arkansas). Despite all that, the Tigers never left the Top 10, and I wouldn't be surprised if they never left the Top Six.

So who deserves to be in the big game out of the Big 12 Conference? Oklahoma.

Why? Because they did everything right, and they got the shaft from a two-bit team from Baton Rouge.

Big East Conference

Out of this conference, there were two potential BCS Title Contenders: West Virginia and South Florida. When the smoke cleared, the Mountaineers didn't finish the job at the end of the season, and the Bulls gored themselves out of the race. After suffering three devastating losses, the Bulls were out of the picture, leaving UConn and West Virginia to battle for the conference crown.

Even though they won the crown, they lost the game. All they had to do was beat Pittsburgh to lock up a showdown with either Ohio State or Missouri, depending on the Big 12 Championship Game. Unfortunately, West Virginia let Morgantown down and will have to settle for being on the outside looking in.

After the loss to Pittsburgh, LSU fans rejoiced as they won the SEC Championship against a mediocre Tennessee team that was already banged up from their shootout in Lexington (which by the way, LSU lost). It would have come as no surprise that LSU would get it done in Atlanta.

Who deserved to go to the dance in this conference? West Virginia.

They won their division even before LSU, and they actually earned the right to be called champions, unlike the Pussycat Dolls of Baton Rouge.

PC Load Letter? What the *&@$ does that mean?

A group of old fogies who are already on their deathbeds couldn't figure out who wanted it more. What do they do? They let a computer decide the fate of humans. Now if that isn't an insult to one's intelligence, I don't know what is.

We didn't have a computer decide anything in the past and no one complained about how the games turned out either. So should a playoff system be in force now? Absolutely!

After watching LSU make a mockery of the system once again, it's clear that next season they should take the Top 12 teams, lock them in a cage, and let them tear each other apart.

Simply put, the BCS is based on the Top 12 in the country. Why not put those teams in a playoff, let them battle it out, and the last two standing can duke it out for a BCS National Championship?

Insane? Unheard of? Bullcocky, you say? There is a league out there using that system, and it has worked for 40 years. Do you know what that league is? It's the NFL.

The Final Verdict

After careful deliberation, I have decided there is indeed one game I will not be watching this year. One team deserves to be there, but the computer wants a preview of next season's Big Ten showdown between the Buckeyes and Wolverines early. With Les Miles leaving Baton Rouge after this "game," it's clear that someone wanted to give him a going-away present early.

Over the next few weeks, every team with two losses should write the BCS Committee and ask them to hang themselves for the stupidity they have created.

Ohio State fought hard to make it to New Orleans, with only one loss and the Big Ten wrapped up after beating Michigan. LSU lost to Kentucky, barely beat Auburn, squeaked past Florida, then got shocked in triple overtime by Arkansas. No offense, but I think Illinois is a better team than Arkansas and the polls prove it.

Despite it all, the voters have been pleading and brown-nosing to keep their beloved Bayou Yarn Chasers in the Top Five, even though it's clear they didn't deserve to be there.

So Les Miles, you, your team, the BCS, and all the people who are actually showing support for this group of pathetic bandits are all guilty of screwing the system. The penalty for this crime: your third loss of the season, to come at the hands of Jim Tressel and his Ohio State Buckeyes.

The SEC should be ashamed and embarrassed for the fact that the Tigers got in on a technicality. And don't worry LSU. This is just the beginning of my columns on how much you suck. I intend to make sure by the time kickoff comes next month that everyone hates your guts just as much as everyone in Morgantown, Columbia, Norman, and Kansas all do.

This court is adjourned...for now.
