Tennessee Titans vs Arizona Cardinals: 10 Titan Things to Watch For

Blaize PenningtonAug 22, 2010

Last year the Arizona Cardinals game was probably the best game the Titans have played in recent memory. Vince Young engineered a memorable drive that showed his potential as a starting quarterback in this league.

Tomorrow the Titans get another shot at the Cardinals. Things are a little different this time as it is only a preseason game. The same emotions will not be there, but there is still a lot to watch for.

Here are ten things to watch during this preseason game.

1) Vince Young Vs Matt Leinart Round Two

Last year Vince Young was the star of the game. He once again took a team that was supposed to lose and won a big game. Matt Leinart is finally the starter in Arizona and the team is his.

There won't be a lot of stats out of these two quarterbacks this game, but it will be interesting to see how they both handle their first drives of the game. It will be a fun comparison to make at the end of the game.

2) Damian Williams Back From Injury

Damian Williams had an injury riddled start to his college career, and it seems like history is repeating itself for his pro career.

Williams has been battling a hamstring injury since late July and is finally gonna get to play in his first NFL game.

Fisher has plans for Williams in both the returning game and the receiving game. It will be interesting to see what he can do, especially with Marc Mariani looking as good as he did.

3) New Running Back Samkon Gado

Samkon Gado has been in the league five years and has been on six teams already. The Titans may be one of his last shots at being in the NFL.

Gado was the team leader in rushing for the Packers his rookie season, but really hasn't done much since. Gado could challenge LeGarrette Blount and Alvin Pearman for a roster spot, but its probably going to come down to his special teams play rather than his running ability.

4) Alterraun Verner and Jason McCourty

Cortland Finnegan is not going to play in this game. This means Jason McCourty, Alterraun Verner, and Ryan Mouton will get a lot more playing time.

Verner and McCourty will probably get the start, but I would not be surprised if Mouton got some playing time with the starters.

So far Verner has shown out more than the other corners, but that was also against Seattle's second team offense. I personally can't wait to see Verner up against Larry Fitzgerald or Steve Breaston.

5) Ryan Mouton's Second Chance

Ryan Mouton had a rough first game as far as tackling went. He started out with a diving pass break up, but it didn't get any better from there.

Mouton missed a crucial tackle against former Titan Mike Williams that led to a Seahawk touchdown. He eventually made up for it with an interception, but it was the jump by Alterraun Verner that actually caused Charlie Whitehurst to overthrow the receiver to the outside.

A second chance is all Mouton can ask for, and that is what he will get. What he does with it is yet to be seen, but its drama like this that makes the preseason so exciting.

6) Kenny Britt's Confidence

Kenny Britt has looked very shaky after coming into training camp "out of shape." When he catches the ball, it seems like he does not remember what he is supposed to do.

Hopefully playing against the team that he played against in the game that made him a hero will bring some of the confidence back. As Madden 2011 would put it, his "swagger rating" is really low right now.

7) Special Teams Play

Marc Mariani and Damian Williams will be fighting for the kick returner and punt returner spot.

Mariani showed last week that he can do the job and do it well. Every kick return he took out to the 25 which is a fine starting position.

This will be Williams' first attempt in a real game situation. However, in practice, Williams was catching punts one handed. That doesn't say much about his returning ability, but at least he is sure handed.

8) Will Stephen Tulloch Continue to Step Up?

With Keith Bulluck gone, the Titans need a leader to step up on defense. So far that leader has been Stephen Tulloch.

In the first game, Tulloch made a great tackle and an even better pass deflection. His emotion showed on the field, and he seemed to pump up the team around him.

This next game will give Tulloch the chance to show everyone that he is the new leader. We really will not know for sure until the regular season, but maybe we will get a glimpse.

9) Defensive Line Play

Jacob Ford will get a chance to start for his second consecutive preseason game as Derrick Morgan and William Hayes are both out for the game.

Ford has always played a critical role as a backup on this squad, and he has done it well. Jason Babin, Raheem Brock, and Dave Ball will probably all switch out with the first team to get everyone some experience.

With the two starters injured, this game will really show the depth on the team. All we can hope as fans is that this depth is very good.

10) Marc Mariani Stealing The Show

10 of 10

Marc Mariani has the best hands on the team. He may not be the fastest or jump the highest, but he can catch a ball as you see in the video.

Mariani caught three balls for 21 yards in the first game, and he may get some more looks in the next one. Rusty Smith seems to be developing a connection with Mariani and that could lead to some big plays.

I would personally like to see Mariani receive some passes from Vince Young, but that is unlikely in this game.
