Should Liverpool Use Cash from Mascherano Sale To Bid for Robinho ?

Kaustav BoseAug 24, 2010

After the crunching defeat at the hands of Manchester City at the City of Manchester Stadium, Roy Hodgson should very well know that his work of reconstruction at Anfield is not yet over.

However, there are little doubts as to what the Reds need to strengthen most, the striking options. With Fernando Torres still at least a week or so from the requisite level of match fitness and with David N’gog’s maturity far from satisfactory, the Reds could only do well by adding at least another good striker to the lineup.

Who better for the job than Manchester City outcast, Robinho ?

The Brazilian striker had been in very good form for the Citizens after joining the club in 2008 in a record move from Real Madrid.  Although Robinho fell down the pecking order at Manchester after an injury-stricken season that followed, he has had one of the best possible World Cup displays for Brazil and looks set to set the stage on fire given a chance.

Now there are a few reports which suggests that even with their weak financial health, Liverpool look good enough to at least put forward a bid for the enigmatic striker who also has the crucial Premier League experience.

Firtsly, reports have it that the Turkish giants Besiktas and Fenerbahce are gearing to snap up the man from Eastlands on a 16m GBP deal before the deadline day.

Secondly, there are also reports that Barcelona are ready to up their bid for Mascherano from Liverpool and after the rumoured  £16 to 18 million bid rejected, they may well turn up with a £20-22m bid soon enough.

Thirdly, there were also some reports suggesting that Liverpool had agreed to increase current wages to up to a hefty £100k per week for Mascherano only if he stayed on.

Considering all the above to be credible news, Liverpool seem good enough to steal the Brazilian from under the nose of the Turkish rivals if only they are interested to do so.

Liverpool would be a far better option for Robinho for two reasons. Firstly, joining Turkish clubs from City is not really a step up. Secondly, as Robinho’s desire to play in Brazil is not getting fulfilled because of the hefty price tag, he would do better to play in England, where he has had the experience to play and still be a huge hero in his own rights.

For Liverpool FC, this deal is the best possible deal as they prioritize signing an experienced striker. Judging by potential, Robinho would be an explosive option and the combination of Robinho and Fernando Torres up front sounds a mouthwatering prospect.

Moreover, paying some £13 to 15m for an untested player is surely a foolish thing to do if only they can get a player of Robinho’s stature at a couple of million more pounds which they surely should be able to afford if Mascherano moves out the way for £20m.

Now, why should City sell the player at all to their rivals is the only question which is left to be answered. The answer to that is simply because they don’t need him and any money they recover after the £130m outlay should be a welcome.

Although there lies a possibility that City may intervene and still insist on selling the striker to Fenerbahce for a lesser sum, it would be foolish for them to do so if they  make a marginally better profit by selling it to Liverpool, whom they have found to be pretty below par last night.

All in all its just speculation from a fan at this stage and highly unlikely may be, but given the paucity of options up front, Liverpool FC could well look at this option sooner rather than later. As for those who think we are not in a position to go for a gamble buy like Robinho, well, it's far better to get a player like him for that sum rather than let it Hicks and Gillett sap it for their benefit!
