Manny Pacquiao Aims To Surpass Recent Mayweather-Mosley Fight Purse
Manny Pacquiao aims to surpass Floyd Mayweather, Jr's latest guaranteed fight purse which amounted to $22.5 million from his showdown with Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010.
Pacquiao's Canadian adviser Michael Koncz said Pacquiao has asked promoter Bob Arum for an additional sum on top of the guaranteed fight purse with his upcoming fight with Antonio Margarito.
Although Arum did not disclose the guaranteed fight purse, knowledgeable sources say the amount is less than what Mayweather made during his fight with Shane Mosley.
When informed of the Filipino boxer's wish for an upward adjustment in pay, Arum was reportedly more than wiling to grant Pacquiao's request.
Still, the prize money, although not disclosed to the media by the astute promoter, is presumed to be far less than what Mayweather got in his recent showdown with Mosley, which was $22.5 million.
Michael Marley of Examiner.com recently came up with a bright idea for Pacquiao to grab the unofficial "highest-paid boxer" title of the decade from Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Marley suggested to Bob Arum that he gives Pacquiao a guaranteed purse of $22 million plus one dollar. That would give Pacquiao one dollar more to beat Mayweather as the world's highest paid boxer.
Arum, as of Sunday, has not responded to the proposal.
If Arum agrees to Marley's suggestion, Mayweather will be left with just one more title to keep, which is the prestigious title of being undefeated in his entire professional boxing career, popularly known as his precious "zero."
Still boxing fans say the "zero" entry in his Wikipedia win/loss record is continuously being threatened and challenged by Pacquiao and very soon the "zero" will be gone once the undefeated boxer agrees to Manny's fight challenge.
That would leave Mayweather, Jr. without any title to be proud of.
Mayweather's loss could happen even if he continues to ignore Pacquiao's challenge for a duel inside the boxing ring to settle once and for all who the greatest boxer of the new millennium is.
By continuously ducking and ignoring Pacquiao's challenge, Mayweather stands to lose his title as the highest-paid boxer of this decade.
Mayweather has recently lost his Yahoo Sports pound-for-pound title to Pacquiao who is now the top pound-for-pound fighter in both the Yahoo Sports and Ring Magazine rankings.
Prior to these titles, Mayweather has lost to Pacquiao as last year's "Best Fighter of the Year" and "Best Fighter of the Decade," two prestigious awards given by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA).
Except for his "zero" loss record, Mayweather is now known as the second best boxer, with Manny Pacquiao getting the top post in Yahoo Sports, Ring Mag, and BWAA.
Boxing fans, especially the ones who are supportive of Mayweather's professional career, think the undefeated boxer will eventually break his own self-imposed gag order on the issues surrounding the failed negotiations.
And when he does, he will call Pacquiao's challenge and show the world he is in no way scared of the Filipino boxer as most people say.
