Liverpool vs. Arsenal: Steven Gerrard & Five Players To Watch

Maxx GAug 14, 2010

It is Super Sunday. With the English Premier League on with a great start, this is indeed the best fixture to set eyes on.

While Liverpool struggles their way to claim a spot in the top 4 this year from number 7 last year, Arsene Wenger's Arsenal will look to win the Silverware this time.

Roy Hodgson's Liverpool are looking fine and good, and they are up for a big challenge ahead after Rafa Benitez left his club. Questions stare at them as they head to their first game. Can Hodgson be successful in his policies? Can his transfer plans be justified really? Can Torres race for the golden boot seat with highest goals?

On the other hand, Arsene Wenger's Gunners are trying to shake down the failures of last time and ready for a new start. While Cesc Fabregas stays one more season with his team, Arsenal finds a new reason to believe in, this may be their season.

Manuel Almunia (Arsenal): Forced Number 1 Or Really Number 1?

You must be surprised by seeing this man in my choice list, but there is a logic for every thing.

When Wenger has not still been able to find out a replacement to his goalkeeper, and has failed evidently in all the bids that he put up for ones like Mark Schwarzer (Fulham), it becomes clear that may be Manuel Almunia is having his another stay as the Number 1 in Arsenal.

The season's transfer window is about to close some days later and we don't see a replacement or someone coming up to save the Gunners from the scapegoat player Almunia. Or is it Almunia who needed to be rescued and had a new start somewhere else like Osasuna?

Whatever the answer is, it becomes clear that Almunia is going to play a major role in Arsenal this year too, be it in their victory or in failure.

So, you got to watch for the Spaniard in today's match, can he bring new hopes for Arsenal? Can he remove the black demons of his dreams and fight his way to be back as really Arsenal's Number 1? Can he gun away the Reds?

O, by the way, it is perhaps needless to say that Wenger's reserve and sub boys are still not up to that ready to replace this man.

Milan Jovanovic (Liverpool): Did They Buy The Right Man?

Milan Jovanovic was brought on a free transfer to Liverpool by the ex-manager Rafael Benitez from Standard Liege. Rafa wanted to join him with Inter too, after he resigned from Liverpool but Jovanovic honored his contract staying with the Reds.

This will be his first big game as such in the EPL, and can this be a good season for the winger-cum-forward? While he will add good strength to the Reds attack, and is surely a favorite from Standard Liege, but can he prove himself in the bigger stage?

As Fernando Torres still remains a doubt from injury whether to start the match or not, Jovanovic will be a player to watch for surely. The 29 year old did got criticisms when he was signed by the Reds, but can he silence them all?

Theo Walcott (Arsenal): You Must Have Been a Fool Capello!

This boy just leaves me gaping when he runs in his blistering pace and dribbles past defenders like a bullet fired from the gun. Surely Walcott, sometimes it seems that you have frozen the time around you.

Arsene Wenger's super sub Theo Walcott needs to start to bring in the energy in the Gunners. He is fast, he is young, he is good at dribbles, he is something that Arsenal can bank upon.

And as I said, Fabio Capello must have been a fool to not include him in England's World Cup squad.

Joe Cole (Liverpool): The Biggest Free Signing Of The Season?

Perhaps he is the biggest free signing of the season. Joe Cole joined Liverpool from Chelsea and hopes are on him to turn the fortunes at Anfield.

While he has been an out of form player lately, but again he scored the goal last season for Chelsea which took the Champions ahead of Manchester United. What I think is Joe is a great player, only inconsistent in form , but has great technical ability and wonder skills which he can use to gear up the Reds. And at times, he can put the ball past the goalie in the net with ease and confidence.

Will this be the turning point for Cole and so for Liverpool?

To me, he will be the center of people's attraction today. Some will wish he rise to glory, some will... oh, all are not well-wishers Cole!

Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal): Can He Give Another Great Season?

Perhaps words are never enough to describe talents or players like Fabregas, but I will wait to see another great season from the star.

While the big mouthed Barcelona put an end to their Fabregas dreams for this season, questions come up like does Fabregas really feel the same playing for the Gunners? Or if he fails in a match, will he receive hated comments or will the Gooners stand up for him as they did?

Surely, one of the best players to watch, not only in this match, but for the season also.

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool): The King Will Lead His Men To Glory?

Steven Gerrard is a great great player.

Steven Gerrard had a not-so-good last season.

Steven Gerrard played as an outstanding player in England's miserable WC tour 2010.

Steven Gerrard is the inspiration of the Reds. He decided to stay. And stay to win. To lead his men.

I believe he will be one of the greatest come-back players of the season. And he will the one for the smile on Red face.
