Top 10 Coolest Celebrity Sports Fans
Although we sometimes think that celebrities are just super pretty people with a lot of money who we can worship and gawk at, it doesn't mean they don't have the same crappy sports love that we all do.
It might seem surprising that people with seemingly everything in the world (money, fame, power) could "waste" their time believing in something as trivial as a sports team.
Some celebrities just go to games to be seen. And that sucks. What separates bandwagon celebrity fans from the real deal? Drive, emotion . . . and a lot of money because those great seats at playoff games are expensive.
Here are the top 10 celebrity sports fans!
No. 10: Jessica Alba, Golden State Warriors
1 of 10
Definitely the oddest bit of Jessica Alba trivia to ever hit the airwaves is that she is a huge, huge, HUGE Golden State Warriors fan. Even with the Warriors record, it's not a bad team for which to root. Steph Curry, David Lee, Andris Biedrins, and Donnie Nelson's eventual retirement in 2011.
*note* The first blog post ever about Jessica Alba that hasn't mentioned her prettiness. Dammit, I just ruined it.
No. 9: Elijah Wood, West Ham
2 of 10
Elijah Wood is an American . . . then what in the hell is he doing watching the EPL. Even if he does forgo the American sports to watch English soccer, at least he could pick a legitimate team: Manchester, Chelsea, Arsenal. Even Everton, so he could watch US goalie Tim Howard.
Way to avoid the bandwagon, Elijah! West Ham is a pretty average futbol team that Wood fell in love with while filming the movie Green Street Hooligans.
No. 8: Bill Murray, Chicago Cubs
3 of 10
Bill Murray has spent the previous decade playing depressing characters in great moves (Rushmore; The Royal Tenenbaums; Lost In Translation; Broken Flowers), and it's fitting that he is also a fan of the most depressing sports team in America.
The Cubs deserve a World Series just like Murray deserves an Oscar and I doubt either of them get to their goals anytime soon. If the Steve Barton game was Murray coming "this close" to winning an Oscar for Lost In Translation, then this current Cubs season is definitely Garfield 2.
No. 7: Billy Crystal, New York Yankees
4 of 10
I don't care who you are or who you root for. It's always pretty cool when a rich movie star pays a team to let him go through training camp. Even though it's a cop-out to be a Yankees fan, it's really awesome that Crystal got to play with them for a few days.
Few celebrities would ever do that. Props to the Yankee organization too for allowing it.
No. 6: Drew Carey, Cleveland Indians, Browns, Cavs
5 of 10
Drew Carey is one proud Cleveland native.
It's hard to screw around watching Cleveland teams. The Browns have little hope to compete for the next few seasons, the Indians had superstars, but they either traded them away (Lee, Sabbathia) or watched them break down through injuries (Hafner, Sizemore). The Cavs just got the basketball version of a wife leaving a husband by hooking up with the rich guy across the street.
Still, Carey keeps going with his teams. I guess that's what being a fan is all about.
No. 5: Jerry Seinfeld, New York Mets
6 of 10
It's always great when aging comedians bash rising pop stars. That's what Seinfeld just did recently when Lady Gaga cursed out a bunch of Mets fans at a recent game.
Seinfeld is a pretty hardcore Mets fan.
It's cool when celebrities choose teams that haven't won much in the past. It would be easy for Seinfeld to just attach himself to the Yanks. Playoff seats are a plus, and it's probably more fun rooting for Derek Jeter then it is rooting for a bunch of overpaid superstars (Beltran, K-Rod, Bay) who fill the clubhouse at Citi.
No. 4: Ashley Judd, Kentucky Wildcat Basketball
7 of 10
Ashley Judd is, without a doubt, the most famous woman sports fan in this country. It would be shocking to be watching a Kentucky basketball game on television and to not see Judd cheering in the stands.
She does get it kinda easy because KU always has a good team. They play in a mediocre conference and are constantly in the tournament every March. They rarely win though. It's kind of like rooting for Ohio State in football.
No. 3: N.W.A., Oakland Raiders
8 of 10
There have been no other sports fan that have made the impact on a specific team like NWA has. With their gangsta style they were able to turn the Raiders into a brand. Raiders jerseys, hats, and jackets were soon worn by kids not only on the West coach, but everywhere in the country.
It is really quite remarkable. The Raiders took their bad boy image and transcended far outside the rap game. NWA was important for their music, but also for the way that they were able to brand their gangster image.
No. 2: Jack Nicholson, Los Angeles Lakers
9 of 10
I know Jack Nicholson has been the biggest Laker fan in the world.
He's at every game and he's always cheering and going crazy for the team. But honestly, how easy is it to root for the Lakers. They are always good. They have four players (Kobe, Chamberlain, West, Shaq) included in the list of the top 10 players to ever walk on the court.
Nicholson has seen five championships in the past 10 years. It's really the easiest team to ever root for. And for Nicholson to be a native of New Jersey, it makes it that much more evidence that he's just some cheap bandwagon fan.
No. 1: Spike Lee, New York Knicks
10 of 10
Spike Lee is at every Knicks game. He's always in on the action even when the team sucks. The Knicks have little to be excited about. They just overpaid for Amar'e Stoudamire and seem destined for another lottery. Lee is the Knick fan. They should give him a piece of the franchise.
