Is Devon Alexander Ready for Timothy Bradley?
Devon "The Great" Alexander, owner of the IBF and WBC junior welterweight belts, made it clear after his win over Andriy Kotelnik Saturday who he wants to fight next.
It's time for Timothy Bradley to step up to the plate.
Instead of Bradley trying to reach for the stars and a piece of Manny Pacquiao, which will never happen in my book, Bradley should accept the challenge from Alexander.
When I watched the fight on HBO's "Boxing After Dark," it was about survival and pride for Alexander.
That was a given.
He fought in his hometown of St. Louis in front of around 10,000 in the Don King ring, with the crook and his newfound and possible "business partner" watching.
I can understand that undefeated boxers want to fight conservatively.
Alexander's 20-0 (now 21-0) record was in danger.
"The Great" has had tougher fights before on his rise to the top of the division.
Two TKO's to Juan Urango and Junior Witter, both which ended in the eighth rounds, and a decision against DeMarcus Corley proved that Alexander can step up.
Kotelnik was tough on Alexander, especially in the later rounds.
The strategy from Alexander's trainer, Kevin Cunningham, was to attack Kotelnik early.
Trying to brawl with Kotelnik left Alexander off balance throughout the fight.
It was a flaw that the Kotelnik corner saw.
They noticed that Alexander can't fight up close.
When Kotelnik got close to Alexander, he tagged him, opening a cut above his right eye in the ninth round.
Kotelnik tried to take advantage of Alexander's cut. A couple of combinations could've been curtains for Alexander.
Cunningham put the conservative game on after the ninth round after he saw that Kotelnik was gaining momentum.
He told Alexander to box instead of fight.
There was little fighting and a little more holding in the last three rounds.
Alexander, who escaped with a 116-112 victory from all three judges, got the nod because he was the busier fighter.
After the fight, Alexander had his sights set on Bradley.
"Bradley, he keeps talking that he's the best in the business," he said. "I want that."
Devon, I don't think you're ready for Timothy Bradley.
If you called your performance against Kotelnik "okay," then you have to hit the gym.
His camp has plans to fight quality future opponents on the horizon.
Max Kellerman said that Alexander look good instead of great.
Alexander looked vulnerable at times during the fight, which Bradley will take advantage of if they ever meet in the ring.
One person Alexander has in his corner that Bradley doesn't is Don King.
I don't know where Alexander get this idea that Amir Khan is scared of him.
Kellerman is on the Alexander bandwagon because he puts his money on this guy being the future pound-for-pound king.
Do you know how many boxers want that PFP title?
I'm afraid that Alexander will have to wait in line for a piece of Bradley.
There's Khan, Zab Judah, Juan Manuel Marquez and maybe Ricky Hatton, who's rumored to be on a comeback, on the food chain ladder to knock Bradley off his perch.
