Say It Out Loud: Simona De Silvestro Is Better Than Danica Patrick
You may have clicked on this article because the title struck a nerve. Before you go off and start defending Danica Patrick, please continue with the rest of the article.
Today's event at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio wasn't the main reason for this article, but it only adds to the point I am trying to make. Keep in mind that Patrick has been in the IndyCar Series for six years now, while Simona De Silvestro is a rookie this season. Patrick has one win, when the drivers in front of her ran out of gas in Japan.
Although she began her career with Rahal Letterman Racing, she has been with Andretti long enough that she can not blame her bad finishes on equipment or anything to do with something other than her own talent, or lack there of.
Read it carefully, I'm not saying she has no talent, she is clearly better than Milka Duno and a few others, but she is nowhere near a top ten driver, even in the IndyCar Series. I don't know how she expects to have a successful career in NASCAR, or if she even does at all.
The simple fact is Patrick seems to have spent more time marketing, promoting, and posing for the camera than she has inside the car. She talks all the time about how she is so determined to win, and is highly motivated and hates to lose. I have yet to see her showing any real heart this year. I think she may have already checked out. At least the ovals are almost here again; there is just one more road course.
Taking a look at De Silvestro's short stint in the Series so far, things are looking bright for her. She has two top ten finishes this year, as she finished today's event in eighth place, after being in the top five most of the day. The driver for Team Stargate Worlds/HVM started in the top ten, and seems to have a solid grip on the road courses already.
Some people have compared Patrick to Dale Earnhardt Jr. in NASCAR, but at least he used to be pretty good. With the help of better equipment and possibly a new team down the road, De Silvestro could have a very nice career in the IndyCar Series.
