2011 College Football Recruiting: The Top 10 Gamers W/ Video
The game film.
Some players are just gamers.
Scouts will downgrade them for any number of reasons, but when the pads come on these guys just straight up perform. When you watch game film and highlights as I do, some players just stand out above the others, regardless of their grades.
You can watch only a couple minutes of a certain prospect and know that he's someone to keep your eye on, that this kid can flat out play.
Here are the top 10 gamers from the 2011 recruiting class. To be eligible for the list a prospect must have lower than a 5-star grade.
10. Mustafa Jalil, DT
1 of 10Jalil doesn't stand out in drills or 40-times or anything a scout can put him through without the pads on. but once he straps on his helmet and hits the field for real, this defensive tackle is a behemoth in the middle or just dominates his opponents with strength and athletic ability.
He's raw and needs a lot of work on his technique, but the instincts, power and mean-streak are there. Watching the way he handles offensive lineman at the high school level as if they were children will instantly draw your attention.
9. Lamar Dawson, MLB
2 of 10Commitment: Uncommitted
What will stand out immediately is how aggressive he is every single play. Dawson has an insane motor and plays with the type of passion you love to see from a linebacker.
8. Kyle Boehm, QB
3 of 10Commitment: Cal
There are technique issues, athletic ability issues, accuracy issues, but at the end of the day he can make every throw a college quarterback needs to make and might end up being a player the pro scouts take a very, very close look at in 2014.
7. Victor Blackwell, WR
4 of 10Blackwell is just a bottle of lightning waiting to explode on any give play. He's got a great set of hands, runs smooth routes, and has elite run-after-the-catch ability. He's not very strong though and can get stuffed at the line of scrimmage by more physical defenders.
A year in the weight room would likely solve that problem, but for the scouts its enough to drop outside the top 10 at his position. Forget the rating though, just watch him play.
6. LaMichael Fanning, DE
5 of 10Commitment: Alabama
He just overpowers his opponents, but scarily enough it's his athleticism that's most impressive. For someone his size to move the way he does, it's puzzling how he's rated as the 10th defensive end at best.
5. Kenny Hilliard, RB
6 of 10Commitment: LSU
He makes up for his lack of elite athleticism with instinct and drive. Watching this kid break tackles is a thing of beauty.
4. Damiere Byrd, WR
7 of 10Commitment: Uncommitted
Sometimes you just have to put the height and weight issues aside and watch the game film. It doesn't matter how small Byrd is, he can flat out ball.
3. Kiehl Frazier, QB
8 of 10Commitment: Auburn
He once near single-handedly brought his team back from a 35-point deficit. At 4-stars and ranked as Rivals 62nd overall prospect, Frazier is the most underrated player in the county.
2. Trevon Randle, OLB
9 of 10Commitment: LSU
Give B/R's Bryan Kelly some props on this one; he put Randle No. 3 on his Top 100 List before anyone was talking about him.
1. Jarvis Landry, WR
10 of 10Commitment: LSU
Watch him play and you'll instantly forget that his 40-time is one the slow side or that he supposedly isn't elusive catching the ball.
