Texas Recruiting: Top 10 Offensive Stars of the Lone Star State
The State of Texas is, as usual, chock full of blue chip high school football talent. Here are the top 10 offensive players in the 2011 recruiting class.
1. Malcolm Brown
No surprises here, as he's probably the top back in the nation and we’re familiar with him. Great vision, great power, great feet, and good-to-great speed for his size. Brown is the ideal every down back, and he gets the nod, in a closer than you think race to….
2. Brandon Williams
My man crush on Williams should be evident by now. He doesn’t have the feet or power of Brown, but has better speed and hands out of the backfield. If he was putting up his numbers in four or five-A, I’d have an even tighter decision on my hands. I’ll see Mr. Williams play a couple more times this year, and I’m interested to see how he’s developed size/power-wise.
3. Aaron Green
Well, we knew it was a running back centric class. We’re just as familiar with Green as we are with Brown. He’s got excellent speed and agility, he cuts on a dime, and is always a threat to take it to the house.
4. Trey Metoyer
If the ball is in the air, it’s his. Metoyer has great hands, body control, and coordination. He reminds me of Larry Fitzgerald in those regards. He’s one of those rare guys that just creates separation, Michael Irvin style.
5. Sedrick Flowers
Explosive isn’t typically used to describe a guard, but it’s apropos here. Flowers could actually play DT if that were his calling. He’s got a physicality and disposition about him that is perfectly suited for the trenches. Along with that, he’s got excellent balance. Don’t expect him to RS.
6. Herschel Sims
This guy is just a gamer. He’s got good athleticism, and decent size, but what makes him special are the intangibles. He's got probably the best vision in the class and runs bigger than his size. I’ve compared him to Thurman Thomas often. Team Sims up with this guy, and one would believe that T. Boone got out of the wind powered energy business, and into the hot tub powered time travel racket.
7. Garrett Greenlea
He has college-ready size with above average athleticism. Most schools would put him at LT. With Westerman on board, Texas can afford to put Greenlea at RT, and enjoy a big advantage on the bookends.
8. J.W. Walsh
We talked a little about him yesterday. He's a good athlete, with a good pedigree, and solid arm. If he’s not a three year starter at OSU, well then, that bodes well for them.
9. Jaxon Shipley
Same sort of skill set as Metoyer, with a much different body. Shipley flat out attacks the ball when it is in the air. He’s got great body control, but what sets him apart is his supreme route running. He can shake any defender, any coverage, anytime. As you’d expect in a Shipley, he has excellent hands.
10. Jamal Turner
He is just an excellent dual threat QB, with a pretty nice arm. If QB doesn’t work out for him at NU, no bother, he would have a bright future at either DB or WR.
So that’s my top 10. Who should be higher? Lower? Did I miss somebody?
