Nonito Donaire Squares Off with Fernando Montiel in November
WBA super-flyweight interim champion Nonito Donaire is facing Fernando Montiel of Mexico this November. Venue has yet to be determined, according to Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions.
Donaire is currently ranked No. 4 in The Ring 's pound-for-pound rating. The Filipino-American boxer is also the former IBF World Flyweight and IBO World Flyweight Champion.
Donaire is an orthodox boxer but can also fight as a southpaw. He stands 5'6" with a reach of 68 inches. Donaire is 27 years old.
Donaire fought Hernan "Tyson" Marquez last July 10 in San Juan Puerto Rico and won the match by TKO in Round Eight. The pugilist boxed as a southpaw in the early rounds, with Marquez standing toe to toe with his opponent.
Donaire returned to the orthodox stance in the Round Five and went on the offensive, sending Marquez down with a combination.
Donaire then doubled up his combinations in Round Eight, sending Marquez down with a left uppercut and prompting the referee to stop the fight. The bout was supposed to be his last fight in the super-flyweight division.
Montiel is the current WBO and WBC bantamweight champion. He is also the former WBO flyweight and super-flyweight champion. He is currently rated by The Ring Magazine as the No. 10 pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
Montiel is 31 years old and stands 5'4" with a reach of 66.5"
On July 17, 2010, Montiel successfully defended his titles against Rafael Concepción . Montiel dropped Concepcion to the canvas twice in Round Two before knocking him out in Round Three.
Donaire is challenging Montiel's WBO and WBC 118-lb belts.
“That’s really the big fight for me. Montiel’s a great champion; for me he holds the title the best in the bantamweight (division) and I think I can handle him,” the California-based Donaire said in an earlier interview on the Sports Chat radio program yesterday.
“I want big fights. I want to test my skills against elite fighters and show that I’m in their league,” he said.
Donaire said he wanted to fight in the undercard of the November scheduled fight of his fellow Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, but the venue has yet to be decided by his promoter.
Although Montiel is smaller in build and shorter in reach than Donaire, the Mexican boxer has more experience in the ring, having fought 47 times with only two losses and two draws.
Donaire has fought 25 times, winning 24 and losing only once.
Since the two popular boxers are both ranked in The Ring 's pound-for-pound ratings, the scheduled Donaire-Montiel match is expected to be a hit in boxing's box office this year.
