Mixed Reactions To Floyd Mayweather's Tactics
Last week, when I wrote that Manny Pacquiao's camp drew first blood by presenting their offer to Floyd Mayweather, I didn't know what kind of reaction it would bring.
So, out of over 3,000 readers (and counting) and nearly 70 comments, I will summarize the comments I liked.
Before I go into that, let me point out that Floyd Mayweather appeared at a basketball charity event in Miami over the weekend to "coach" the game.
He didn't think that someone would avoid asking a boxing question, did he?
Even though Mayweather answered questions about the NBA, somebody asked why he let the midnight deadline to accept the offer for the superfight pass.
Mayweather's response was that he wasn't interested in rushing to do anything, pointing out that he last fought two months ago.
Okay, I respect that from "Money."
But the least Mayweather can do is accept the offer and set the fight 12 months from now.
If Roger Mayweather has to do some jail time for his alleged assault case, Floyd Jr.'s daddy, Floyd Sr., can step in and train him.
So as it stands, at least for now, Mayweather swung and missed at a first pitch fastball.
But according to George Roundtree, a reader, he said the Mayweather camp presented a deal to the Pacquiao camp this past January.
The negotiations involved Top Rank, Mayweather Promotions, and Golden Boy Promotions.
The Pacquiao side refused the deal.
All this stuff about Mayweather wanting Pacquiao to take a drug test is irrelavant.
Drugs or no drugs, the natural boxing ability of both fighters should determine the outcome.
Plus, whichever boxer is fighting on drugs would probably be dead if he was clocked with a devastating knockout blow.
Red August thinks Mayweather likes to duck fighters he might lose to.
I'd say that if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then he is a duck.
Didn't Sugar Ray Leonard duck Marvin Hagler when Hagler wanted a rematch?
That fight was highway robbery.
Victor, my favorite commentator who's a very passionate boxing fan, thinks Mayweather is a chicken.
I said the only chicken who wasn't scared to fight was Chicken George.
He's probably too young to remember who Chicken George was.
People two generations ago should know who Chicken George was.
Here's a hint for Victor: watch Alex Haley's "Roots" or read the book.
Superstar Billy Graham, my second favorite commentator, is who I used to watch on TV.
But I have to point out that I didn't rank Mayweather as the No. 1 PFP fighter. I said he was the No. 1 boxer at welterweight and Pacquiao is No. 2.
Pacquiao is between a junior welterweight and welterweight, so his weight goes up and down.
He will have to come up to Floyd's weight class to fight.
"Superstar" came from the old AWA, or was it the NWA?
I bet he doesn't know that NWA was a gangster rap group.
Too much water on the brain, thinking about being slammed by Nick Bockwinkel or Cowboy Bob Orton too many times.
Being tossed to the canvas will do that to a guy like him.
Mayweather calls the shots, like Siparia Bonito, my third best commentator, said.
The world is waiting on Mayweather to make a decision because the payout will be huge.
In the Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight, Bob Arum got 27 percent of Pacquiao's $12 million purse and Golden Boy Promotions took seven percent.
So I guess Oscar de la Hoya is still getting paid, even though he's not boxing.
Mayweather pocketed about $40 million from his fight against Shane Mosley without paying promoter fees.
These are not my figures. I got the info from Mr. Bonito, so sound off at him.
If Pacquiao can no longer wait on Mayweather, he can arrange a fight with Timothy Bradley or Paul Williams.
The Pac Man isn't ready for Bradley.
Fighting Williams is like Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini fighting Thomas "Hitman" Hearns.
I brought up the rumor about someone injecting Mayweather's hands with a drug.
That rumor was brought up by Mosley's trainer in a conference call during the HBO series, 24/7, Mayweather vs. Mosley.
I won't tell you which episode it was because you should've been watching it.
Willy Jakes told me the drug was Xylocaine, which Mayweather used because he had hand problems.
Jakes believes that Mayweather stopped using it.
The Pacquiao camp has done everything but show up at Mayweather's door with the contract offer.
It might take some parental guidance from Floyd Sr. to tell his son how much of an idiot he is for putting the fight on hold.
