AC Milan: So When Are We Going To Get Serious on a Midfielder?

Tim FontenaultJul 15, 2010

As I, and pretty much the world, has stated, AC Milan needs a change.

That we all know.

It sounds like Galliani has been hard at work the past couple of days, despite constant criticism of Italian Prime Minister and Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi for wanting to be very inactive in the transfer market.

Reports have Milan very interested in Lukas Podolski, provided they can sell Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, as well as interest in Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Genoa.

Milan has made a few small moves since the window opened a couple of weeks ago.

They were able to acquire Genoa goalkeeper Marco Amelia on loan. They brought back Elia Legati, who has played on several clubs on loan from Milan since 2006. They also acquired 34 year old Mario Yepes from Chievo Verona.

So they brought in a solid keeper. Good.

They bring back a 24 year old defender who played well in Serie B last season. Ok.

They sign yet another old timer as a reserve defender. Sure?

The move for Papastathopoulos is a good one in my opinion. He played well for Genoa this season then performed well at the World Cup for Greece. He seems to be a versatile defender who can be a replacement for either Nesta or Zambrotta at only the age of 25.

Podolski could be a great move, but I don't see it being completely necessary.

Pato will be back healthy for Milan this season. Borriello was a standout with fourteen Serie A goals. Ronaldinho lead the team with fifteen goals in all competitions.

Huntelaar, when given the opportunity, had some great performances, but was unable to string together consecutive impressive performances, though I think he could really break through this year.

Milan also has two young, talented forwards: Gianmarco Zigoni and Dominic Adiyiah, ages 19 and 20 respectively.

These players, being so young, have not been given the opportunity to prove themselves, though Adiyiah did feature for Ghana at the World Cup in their run to the quarterfinals.

Though a move for Podolski would be great, Milan should first focus on rebuilding the midfield. Even if they can only get one midfielder, that should be the top priority.

What does Berlusconi want us to do? Hold out with Ambrossini, Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf, and the only young(ish) one Flamini until Christian Maldini makes his way into the club?

He's only 14. We can't wait another two years at the earliest for change.

Gennaro Gattuso has been constantly linked with moves around the world this year. Tottenham, Al-Ahli Dubai, and Olympiakos have all been linked to the player.

We all saw it last year. He is not the same player he was in 2007. Let him go. If a team wants to take a risk on him, let them.

Using money from a Gattuso move, though it may only help fund such a move.

Milan needs to find a young talented midfielder to put on a line with Pirlo and Flamini most likely. These two seem to be the most productive midfielders Milan has at the moment.

Names have surfaced all summer, with Keisuke Honda, Clint Dempsey, and Bastian Schweinsteiger all being said to be on the radar of general manager Adriano Galliani.

However, no offers have been made for these, or any midfielders. In fact, the only offers made were truly for Amelia and Yepes.

Berlusconi has stated earlier this summer that if Milan were to make a move, it would be for a "mystery striker." The names of Ibrahimovic, Podolski, and Robinho are most linked with being this player.

Silvio, how about making a move for a midfielder first?

I saw very little impact from the midfield last season. It was old and, by extension, out of shape and injury prone.

As I stated earlier, Pirlo and Flamini are the best options to go a full 90 right now.

Seedorf could be good for a half hour or so off the bench. Despite being captain, I do not see Ambrossini having a big impact this year.

For Milan to have a chance at competing consistently, the midfield needs a new face. This is imperative.

I like Amelia. I like the defense. I like the front line. The midfield has just that one missing link.

Keisuke Honda could be affordable and an immediate impact in the middle of the pitch.

There are many quality players out there that could move at the right price. No matter who it is, Milan need that young, fit, talented player.

Otherwise, forget about competing, period.
