WWE Money in the Bank: Handicapping the Field, Part Two

Josh BrewerJul 8, 2010

In just about a week and a half, WWE's latest themed pay-per-view, Money in the Bank, will come live from Kansas City.

As the name indicates, the night will feature a pair of Money in the Bank ladder matches, one from each brand.

But who will win?

It's a question that will surely garner much speculation leading up to the event, but I've decided to get a jump start on the IWC and do a little handicapping for the big matches.

In this four-part series, I'll be grouping each match's combatants in one of four groups: The Favorites, The Dark Horses, The Wildcards, and The Fillers.

Earlier in the week, I tabbed R-Truth, Chris Jericho, Big Show, and Cody Rhodes as The Fillers. With Truth now out, the odds don't look as good for Raw's Wildcards. R-Truth's spot will likely be filled by Wade Barrett or Triple H (returning earlier than planned), neither of which would be waiting for the rub behind Raw's Wildcards.

Raw's "Wild Cards"—Ted DiBiase and John Morrison

While I can't see either of these men standing atop the ladder victorious next Sunday night, you can't count them out. After all, I didn't think Jack Swagger would win MITB at WrestleMania XXVI.

DiBiase and Morrison are entering the high mid-card range, with a potential feud for the U.S. Title on the horizon after The Miz drops it upon entering the main event scene.

If either of these men were to defy the odds, it seems it would DiBiase. With his win over Morrison (despite Maryse's distraction) Monday night, DiBiase has the slight edge over the most underutilized talent on the WWE roster.

Don't count The Shaman of Sexy out though. It's a match like this that could be the proverbial springboard for Morrison's main event push.

On the other side of the coin, DiBiase and Morrison could easily disappear from the match. DiBiase could be on the receiving end of the match's high spot, possibly from Evan Bourne...or Morrison.

Heading into WrestleMania XXVI's MITB match, Bourne was the man most fans knew was in the match to provide the match's high spot. Sure enough, it was Bourne leaping from the top of a 15-foot ladder, right out of contention.

Morrison could be that man next Sunday night. Or he could be the winner.

Smackdown's "Wildcards"—Kane and Matt Hardy

In any other year, I would have written Kane off just as quickly as I wrote Big Show out of contention.

Not this year, though.

Kane is the reported recipient of a mega-push, which could continue in Kansas City with a MITB victory.

But this is Kane we're talking about. He's been in three MITB matches and never been a factor in any of them.

Before last Friday night, I thought Matt Hardy was there for name recognition and for match build only. After all, Hardy is one of the "masters" of the ladder match.

But his appearance on the Peep Show was an intriguing one. For the first time, it seems Hardy may actually have a shot to fight for a world title.

Is this an instance of a wrestler who is well past due getting his chance at the main event? Or is this just another pipe dream, another superstar to root for despite the glass ceiling above him?

Only time will provide answers to the multitude of questions these four superstars bring to next Sunday night's event. One thing we do know, however, is that anything is possible.
