Mike Jones, Hank Lundy, and Other Prospects Rule the Weekend
This boxing weekend is the best one of the month and is very welcomed by me. It is also very welcoming to see prospects headline the weekend. The ESPN2 card features an all prospect battle between two up and coming fighters. Henry “Hank” Lundy brings his record of 18-0-1 (10 KO) into the ring against John Molina (20-1 16 KO). Molina has one loss and it is against a solid fighter in Martin Honorio. Honorio has scored a few upsets so it isn’t a loss that looks very bad. Lundy on the other hand is a rising prospect that was tested in his last fight against another unbeaten fighter. He won his first professional title by out pointing Tyrese Hendrix over 10. The win netted him the WBO NABO lightweight title. Molina is a tough fighter but isn’t a big step up over Hendrix. This fight is a pure prospect fight and you don’t see them often so enjoy this one. They both have a decent punch and Molina is a come forward action fighter. Lundy also has a good punch but fights a little more defensively then Molina. Lundy has better boxing skills and it should carry him to a exciting victory. The next night we get to see a blue chip prospect climb through the ropes. Mike Jones (21-0 17 KO)defends his NABA and WBO NABO welterweight title against Irving Garcia (17-4-3 8 KO). At first glance Garcia appears to have an ugly record with four losses and three draws in 24 fights. If you take a closer look the record isn’t as ugly as you think. His first was in his 10th fight against a much more experienced fighter. He has a loss to George Armenta who has fought everyone, a loss to Said Ouali, and a loss to Luis Carlos Abregu. One of the four draws was against Yuriy Nuzhnenko in a fight for the interim WBA welterweight title. The fight was stopped on an accidental foul in the 10th round. Jones on the other hand has an undefeated record and some decent names on his resume. He knocked out Israel Cardona in the third round in his 12th pro fight. Cardona was a USBA and NABF lightweight titleholder and lost in a bid for the IBF lightweight title. He also holds a solid win over Henry Bruseles and a nice knockout over trail horse Raul Pinzon. The only common opponent between Jones and Garcia is Hector Munoz. Jones knocked him out in 5 and Garcia was held to a technical draw over two rounds. Garcia would be a nice win but it wouldn’t be the kind of win that would propel Jones into title contention. Jones is by far the better fighter and should pull out a win. Garcia should give him rounds but not many problems. He doesn’t have a big punch and isn’t a better boxer. The undercard of Jones-Garcia features another prospect in Antwone Smith. He fights a solid fighter in Lanardo Tyner. Smith is shaping up to be a cant miss television fighter. Anyway you slice it, this weekend belongs to the prospects and should be action packed. When you kick back this weekend you may be watching the future of the fight game.
