Ghana Pay The Penalty in World Cup Shootout With Uruguay

Marc RosebladeJul 2, 2010

Ghana were Africas last great hope of achieving fame and fortune in the World cup semi finals, and now they're out.

After all the disappointment has washed away and the tears have dried up, people in Ghana and the African continent in general, will look back on the achievements of the Blackstars as a triumph to be celebrated, but for the moment its dejection and gloom.

The fans in Ghanas capital city, Accra, were bemused at the Uruguay equaliser but they must have been devastated when firstly, Gyan missed a last minute extra time penalty and then watched in disbelief as their players missed penalty after penalty in the shootout. To rub salt in the wounds, Sebastian Abreu scored the decisive shoot out winner with a cheeky chip into the back of the net.

Uruguay will now progress to the semis for the first time since 1970 with the Netherlands standing between them and the final.

Uruguay will start that match with the Dutch without Luis Suarez who had been red carded for his goaline handball(save) that had given Ghana their last minute penalty in the first place, but he went from despair at the red card to jubilation at the miss within the space of minutes and he will feel it was a card worth receiving as he saw his team progress to the next round.

Ghana may feel like they deserved to win this match, after all they managed 26 shots in total during the course of the game, but their finishing and some fine goalkeeping saved Uruguay on many occasions including the 2 saves that Fernando MUSLERA managed in shoot out at the end.

Africa will need to wait another 4 years to try again at reaching the semi finals but Uruguay are trying to make their own history by winning another World Cup and if able to do so, it would make it their 3rd title and 60 years since their last one, that surely is a cause worth supporting but there's the small matter of the Netherlands to overcome first on the 6th July in Cape Town.

But today its celebration time down Montevideo way!
