MMA: A Lot of People Do Not Like Nick Diaz--But I Am Not One of Them

Dorothy WillisJul 26, 2008

Perhaps because I have explained that I have been a high school teacher and also a psychiatric nurse on an adolescent behavioral health unit, some would think I would be the first person to be offended by Nick Diaz (as well as his brother Nate) and his behavior.

It is true that I have been rather outspoken on what I hate about the Tuf series and its biannual house destruction.  Those guys can get me up on my soapbox faster than you can say "knock it off boys!"

Other than writing "209" all over his room I don't remember the younger Diaz brother as being big on the destruction of property, and I doubt they have torn up their mother's home as she is one of their biggest supporters and is in charge of their shirt business.

They do both have mouths on them, and yes, I have learned to overlook their predilection for "pot."

As fighters, though both of the brothers know their stuff.  And incidentally are made of pretty strong stuff too,

Nick had a tough fight tonight with 34 year old Thomas Denny who was really looking for another Nick Diaz bloodbath.

For the few of you who don't know this yet, Nick had to have plastic surgery to hone down the sharp ridges of his brows because when hit there he cuts easily and bleeds profusely enough that other fighters ( suchas K. J. Noons) will deliberately work on his brows to open them up and cause the fight to undergo a stoppagedue to the subsequent fountain of blood which is unleashed.

This seems an unfair advantage for Diaz's opponents, and frankly, I admire a man with a smashed up fighter's nose who goes to a plastic surgeon to have his brows shaved down, but doesn't get his nose fixed.  What a man--and definitely not a vain one.

Well in spite of the psychedelic pink hued and sculpted hair styled demonic Denny, Nick managed to hold his own during the bout and, at least in my opinion, gave as good as he got in the first round.  And guess what?  When the fight was overin the second round, Nick had bloodied Denny and instead of a Bjj submission, knocked Denny out!

This left me somewhat elated, and even though Nick was "bleeped" out initially, he was a much better sport this time and shared post fight pleasantries with his opponent, and then had a rather amusing wrestling match of another type with Gus Johnson his interviewer over the microph.one--and Nick won this bout too, much to Johnson's chagrin.

As a giddy spectator, I really loved this bit of comedy added to the Elite XC's second CBS production.

So, let me make this perfectly clear fight fans: I adore both Diaz brothers for their grit and style of fighting, but not for their bad behavior.  OK?
