Money In The Bank PPV: Determining Raw's Direction

Ian MaloneJun 29, 2010

We're in the middle of a youth movement right now on Raw.

Sheamus has twice the number of world titles as he does years of service. Evan Bourne is getting the better of Y2J on pay-per-view. Randy Orton has gone from punting Vince McMahon in the head to being insulted by The Miz. And then there's the Nexus, who come with less qualifications combined between the seven of them than the three I just mentioned.

Yet all of this feels so good.

Jesse Ventura summed it up perfectly when he guest hosted Raw a few months ago. We're tired of the same main events. Now WWE is actually listening to the fans and we're getting what we want.

At least we think we are.

Money in the Bank (MITB) seems like a terrible idea for a pay-per-view. The ladder match that guarantees a future world title has been a fixture at Wrestlemania for years, and it's a great mid-card match that rarely disappoints. But three in one year, let alone two in the same PPV, seems like a bit much.

At the same time the steel cage match for the WWE championship will show us whether or not the WWE is truly behind the Celtic Warrior. The match makes sense since it blocks the Nexus from interfering. Sheamus has never had a clean pin over Cena, and now is the perfect opportunity to do so.

There's just one problem.

Most of us want to see Sheamus have a nice long title reign. Some of us just want to see SOMEONE have a long title reign. History has shown us that 100 percent of those who held the MITB briefcase have successfully cashed it in (I carefully worded that for you, Mr. Kennedy).

So do we want a youth star such as Evan Bourne, The Miz, or John Morrison to win the MITB and then end Sheamus' title reign, or even win and become the first person to fail to successfully cash it in?

Most of the MITB briefcases have been cashed in fairly quickly. Jack Swagger waited just days to cash his in and CM Punk didn't wait much longer either time he won. Rob Vam Dam cashed in his in June and Edge cashed in his second briefcase in May. The first briefcase won by Edge was the only one ever cashed in later than June.

History shows us that Sheamus has maybe two or three months left before the winner cashes in the briefcase, assuming he retains at MITB.

Sheamus could hire protection to defend him after his matches. The Nexus looks like the most logical choice, but Wade Barrett's future title shot will likely squash this opportunity.

Ideally I'd like to see someone like the Miz or Ted DiBiase win and cash it in on Rey Mysterio, who shouldn't be champion anyway due to his health concerns. We haven't seen much brand interaction in the summer though and I doubt we will here.

Having youth vs. youth for the title is something, I think we all can agree, is a step in the right direction for Raw and the WWE as a whole. However these young wrestlers are very fragile and WWE needs to protect them so that they don't get squashed.

Money in The Bank has the potential to be a great PPV. Let's hope that WWE does it right.
