Has Eduardo Seen His Last Days at Arsenal?

Joseph MillardJun 26, 2010

Good morning to you, just a quick one today before I head off to work. Just as well really since the media are obviously very preoccupied with England's last 16 clash with Germany in the World Cup this afternoon.

I must say, there aren't many England games I look forward to, but England vs Germany is a bit tasty even if you don't support either side. There's a long history of painful defeats for both sides leading up to this one, and although the Germans have mostly had the edge, the last competitive meeting between the two was England's 5-1 win in Munich nine years ago.

I think this time around England have the stronger team, but that's not to say the Germans don't have a good side themselves and I can see a case for both teams winning this game. I can't say it would surprise me to see it come down to penalties, and we all know how that ends for England.

Very likely to be joining either England or Germany on a flight back to Europe tomorrow morning is Carlos Vela. One of the three remaining Arsenal players at the World Cup, Vela and Mexico take on Argentina this evening (providing Carlos can overcome a hamstring niggle).

Not that I think the Mexicans are a bad team, I just think that beating Argentina is going to prove too big an ask for them. Making an impact in high pressure situations is not an area that Carlos Vela has excelled in during his time at Arsenal, so it would certainly raise my eyebrow to see him make a telling contribution this evening.

The Mail reports that Arsene Wenger has told Eduardo that he is not in Arsenal's first team plans next season. If true, then it's obviously very saddening news, if not unexpected.

Eduardo has struggled considerably since his return from that horrific injury. I don't think all that nonsense that surrounded his "dive" against Celtic helped much either, as he looked frightened to do anything with the ball when in the final third in his appearances last season.

I don't want to go over old ground too much by talking about the injury. We all know what happened, and sadly Eduardo has never been the same player since. I desperately wanted to see him come back and put it behind him by playing like he was before it happened, but it just hasn't happened.

Perhaps at this stage it might be better for all parties for Eduardo to move on and put everything behind him. It's very sad, but perhaps it's the only choice at this stage. I did wonder when we signed Chamakh if it might spell the end of Eduardo's career at Arsenal. I still hope not in a way, I still wish we could see Eduardo come back to the form he was in pre-leg break, but I must say that at this stage, that seems unlikely.

If Eduardo does leave, then accompanying him through the exit door, as we've known for some time, is William Gallas. Still no firm news on where he's going, but the report from the Mirror is that he's rejected the chance to join Juventus and now has a choice between PSG and Panathinaikos, which I'm sure would please Gilberto Silva.

Either way, his Arsenal contract must be expiring soon which means this whole thing will one way or another cease to be our problem in the near future. I don't think there are too many players in our squad that will be sorry to see the back of Gallas, or indeed too many fans who'll regret his departure on a personal level.

The News of the World believes we're leading the chase for young Danish midfielder  Christian Eriksen because Dennis Bergkamp, who is currently a coach at Ajax, quite likes him. Not too sure how that works.

I can't say he's jumped out at me with his performances at the World Cup, so I know next to nothing about him which is the case for quite a lot of our fans, so that probably means he'll be unveiled as an Arsenal player later today.

Right then, that's your lot for today, back tomorrow.
