Cornelius Bundrage: Cory Spinks Might Be Scared To Fight Me
Cory Spinks was supposed to take on Cornelius “K9” Bundrage on March 26, and then that turned into June 12, until the fight was postponed a second time. Now Bundrage thinks that Spinks might be too scared to fight him.
"Maybe Spinks is scared. Nobody wants to fight me unless I have a terrible outing,” said Bundrage, according to fightnews.com. “Then again, I ain’t the one walking around at 200-pounds.”
There have been rumors that the motive behind the second cancellation was due to Spinks’ weight problems. Don King claims that he moved the bout a second time because it was too close to another big fight he was promoting in St. Louis (Devon Alexander vs. Andriy Kotelnik).
Spinks (37-5 11 KOs) is a proven fighter, but he hasn’t fought since April of 2009 when he claimed the vacant 154-pound belt by out-boxing Deandre Latimore.
Since then, Spinks lost his longtime trainer Kevin Cunningham, who refused to coach him due to his lack of conditioning.
Soon after, he was arrested and charged with DUI in Vero Beach, Florida. Consequently, Spinks was forced to reschedule the mandatory title fight against Bundrage.
Nevertheless, Spinks, now coached by 2002 Trainer of the Year Buddy McGirt, seems more ready than ever to prove himself.
“My title is not leaving St. Louis,” Spinks told ESPN’s Dan Rafael. “I guarantee I will be undefeated for the rest of my career. When I get done with Bundrage, I'll fight anyone: Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams, Shane Mosley—you name it, I'm ready.”
Spinks might not want to make any promises he can’t keep. He may be daydreaming about a bout with Mayweather, but Bundrage (29-4 17 KOs) is no pushover.
Bundrage, from Detroit, Michigan, is most recognized as a participant on The Contender, a boxing reality TV show. After his appearance on The Contender, he racked up his most notable win against former titleholder Kassim Ouma. Bundrage’s most recent fight was against undefeated prospect Yuri Foreman. However, due to an accidental head butt the bout was ruled a no decision.
Now, Bundrage, who is being tutored by Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward, is faced with his greatest opportunity thus far to prove himself to the boxing world against an overconfident Spinks and become a world champion.
The inevitable mandatory challenge fight is expected to take place in August.
