Arsenal Transfer Prospects: Should Wenger Chase Dutch Duo To Replace Cesc?

Callum D'SouzaJun 23, 2010

The FIFA World Cup is a great campaign for talented players striving to make it big in Premier League and La Liga, to showcase their skills and attract big name teams.

The Netherlands contain players already of the highest calibre, enabling the Dutch performers to really make a statement. Two players who are integral in the dominant Dutch are midfielders Wesley Sneijder and Rafael van der Vaart.

The pair ensure that "Oranje" have a clean, fast flowing attack that creates many chances. With the Netherlands breezing through their group stages, becoming one of the first teams to advance to the round of 16, Sneijder and Van Der Vaart have both played impressive parts and Holland are hopeful they can continue their form.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would have no doubt witnessed the Dutch's dominant displays. With Arsenal striker Robin van Persie a key attacker in the Oranje's lineup, Wenger would have been keen to see how his star striker turned out.

Wenger is currently dealing with the problem of keeping his captain and midfield maestro Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates for 2010/2011. However, with the Spaniard eager to return to his boyhood club Barcelona, and with the Spanish giants set to offer an impressive sum, the deal could materialize.

But if Fabregas does depart the blow could be mitigated. Wenger would have the opportunity to replace his irreplaceable with some of the world's top midfielder. Two that stand clear are the deadly Dutch duo.

With the La Liga kings offering around £ 30-40 million, Wenger could use that offer to attract both Sneijder and van der Vaart.

1. Wesley Sneijder

Inter Milan had another hugely impressive season under Jose Mourihno. Winning the Serie A, Coppia Italia, and the Champions League, it was a campaign to remember. One reason why the Italian giants thrived was due to the efforts of Wesley Sneijder.

Having transferred from Real Madrid, the Dutchman was eager to reinstate his obvious talent on the footballing world. He did just that. The 26-year-old was immense, featuring 34 times and netting 8.

Blessed with agile movement, creativity and superb skill, the former Ajax man would be an ideal replacement for "Cesc." He's capable of playing anywhere in the midfield as well as on the wings and as the second striker.

Sneijder is yet to fulfil his goal of playing in the Premier League and if Wenger can attract a tremendous sum from Barcelona, then offloading Fabregas and seducing Sneijder will help ease the pain of Fabregas's departure.

2. Rafael van der Vaart

The 27-year-old has not had the most joyful time since arriving at Spanish giants Real Madrid. After an up down season with "the whites," now could prove an ideal time to depart the Bernabeu and make his trade in the best league in the world.

The former Hamburg maestro would provide added depth, leadership, and skill into the Arsenal midfield. Alongside the likes of Abou Diaby, Alexandre Song, and hopefully Sneijder, Arsenal would boast a formidable midfield easily capable of securing trophies.

Madrid would allow van der Vaart to depart if a desirable sum is evident.

The pair would see Arsenal with a deadly attacking foray and would surely boost their title chances. Fans, critics, and even the Arsenal squad would be bursting with confidence.

So should Wenger chase the Dutch duo?
