Andre Ward-Allan Green: The Super Six Produces a Dud and a Superstar
This past Saturday, the Super Six finally produced a dud. The fight between Andre Ward and Allan Green was a one sided beat down.
There was fear that this would happen because Green just doesn’t show up sometimes. In his biggest chance to date, he didn’t show up at all. You could tell by the third or fourth round that he was done and his confidence was shot. He did a lot of talking and when it came time to walk, he failed miserably.
The major reason he lost confidence early was because Ward is that much better. Green is a B level fighter and Ward dominated him. That is what top tier fighters do to lower tier fighters. Ward, in my mind, is the best super middleweight in the world and he proved that this past Saturday and in previous fights.
He beat the Mikkel Kessler who was thought to be the man. He has now defended his title once and totally smashed an overmatched opponent.
As far as current fighters go, Ward looks like the future No. 1 pound for pound. This guy can do it all in the ring.
I don’t want to hear about Lucian Bute. He hasn’t beaten any top tier 168 lb. fighters and frankly Ward would beat him head to head. Ward can fight on the outside against a bigger man, he can fight on the inside, he will get dirty when he has to, and most importantly, he will change his plan in the middle of fights.
He doesn’t come in with one game plan he comes in with many and will change accordingly depending on how the fight is going. His hand speed is top level and his power commands respect.
Green was the bigger man on Saturday and he still lost the fight on the outside. He was totally schooled by Ward.
He couldn’t find any success against Ward and that is the mark of a great fighter. Ward is the man at 168 lbs. and his future is limitless.
He of course has the rest of the Super Six to complete and is scheduled to fight Andre Dirrell next. This will be another tough fight unless they let their friendship get in the way. Dirrell should actually be the toughest fight for Ward up to this point. Dirrell matches his speed and reflexes but Ward has shown he has that elite fighter mentality.
What sets Ward apart from the other Super Six fighters is that when the going gets tough he gets going. He is a bully in the ring and he isn’t going to quit on anyone.
I think we are watching a special talent in Andre Ward and he is now a must watch fighter. He has the tools and mentality that you don’t see in many fighters. The only thing that can derail Ward in my eyes is his bum knee. I hope that his knee won’t cut his prime short because he has a big future ahead of him.
So while the Super Six produced its first dud of the tournament, the same fight also produced the first superstar of the tournament.
