Chile vs. Switzerland: Winner Will Clinch Spot in Round of 16

Andrew JordanJun 20, 2010

So far in Group H of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, only two matches have been played but the results of these matches could shake the World Cup.

First, Chile beat Honduras 1-0 in Nelspruit before Switzerland beat the reigning European Champions Spain in Durban.

And now at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, the winners of these two matches will face each other with the winner advancing onto the round of 16.

And with this major match, here is my official preview of the match that will shake Group H.

First Match:

Honduras 0 Chile 1

Spain 0 Switzerland 1

Team News:

Chile:

Striker Humberto Suarzo will be fit to play in this match after recovering from a hamstring injury in a pre-World Cup friendly against Israel nearly a month ago.

Switzerland:

Striker Alexander Frei and midfielder Valon Behrami have recovered from injury, but Defender Philippe Senderos is out of this match due to injury.

What is on the line:

Chile:

For Chile, it will be their real shot to advance, as with a difficult match against Spain afterward, a win would make life a lot easier for la Roja.

Switzerland:

For Switzerland, they appear that they will finish first overall in Group H, so a win could clinch that and allow the Swiss to rest many of their starters against Honduras in their final group stage match.

Key Players:

Chile:

For Chile, their key player will be Alexis Sanchez, who played great against Honduras.

A strong match from Sanchez will make Chile's job a lot easier as they attempt to advance.

Switzerland:

In the Spain match, Diego Benaglio, was incredible and was the reason why Switzerland were able to beat Spain.

Now with this match against Chile (who are also a very offensive oriented side), Benaglio must be great again for the Swiss to win.

What each side must do to win:

Chile:

Chile must be able to not put too many people forward on the attack.

Along with that, the defense must play like they did against Honduras.

Switzerland:

Be sure to capitalize on the counterattack similarly to their match against Spain.

And of course, they need a strong defensive effort all around again.

Biggest key to victory:

Chile:

Their strong offense. With Suazo ready to play, they will be much stronger than they were against Honduras.

Switzerland:

Their great defense. Once again, they need to be great and make sure that they are as great as they were against Spain.

Projected Lineups:

Chile (4-2-3-1)

 Bravo

Isla                 Medel                    Ponce                   Vidal

                    Carmona                   Millar

      Sanchez                Fernandez                Beausejour

Suazo

Switzerland (4-4-2)

Derdiyok                   Nkufo

Barnetta               Inler                     Huggel                Fernandes

   Lichtsteiner           Grichting               Von Bergen                Ziegler

  Benaglio

X-Factor:

In this match, the x-factor will be the the midfield play of Chile.

If the midfield is as effective as they were against Honduras, there will be no way they will lose this match.

Prediction:

This is truly one of the best World Cup matches to date on paper, and hopefully this match will live up to the hype.

But amazingly enough, I see this match ending in a 1-1 draw as Chile will not be able to penetrate the Swiss defense as much as they did against Honduras, while the Swiss will not do as well as they did against Spain on the counterattack.
