Super Six World Boxing Classic: Should Allan Green Be Replaced?
Jermain Taylor was the most proven fighter before the Super Six started, he'd been in battle with some legends of the ring. The tournament started at the best time for Taylor, who needed to get back on the list of contenders.
He ended up losing to Arther Abraham in a very familiar way. Questioning his own career, he pulled out of the Super Six.
In comes Allan Green the foruth ranked super middleweight. An American for another American, I thought it was a real good move. Green had never gone 12 rounds before, and never fought for a title belt.
What he had done was fight some pretty good talent coming into the tourney. His only defeat coming into the Super Six was a unanimous decision loss to Edison Miranda in 2007.
Green's first opponent in the Super Six was arguably the best fighter in the whole field, that's only after a decisive win over Mikkel Kessler that Andre Ward became the favorite.
When the odds were set at 6:1 going into the bout, I believed that was a little high. Within the first four rounds I gave Green better than a punchers chance of getting to Ward.
When the opening bell sounded the size difference became obvious. By the end of the first round I realized Green couldn't utilize that advantage. Not to mention, when he realized he couldn't beat Ward to the punch, he gave up all the reach advantage by infighting on the ropes.
Never did he try to turn Ward and set up a better angle. The fight became whatever Ward wanted to do. I actually started to feel bad for Allan Green when he looked like a sparring partner from the gym.
There were times the corner could have thrown the towel in on Green, and unlike the fight with Cotto and Foreman a week ago, it wouldn't have been thrown back out.
Ward had the bigger fighter against the ropes beating him with every exchange of punches. There was a time in the middle rounds where Green got three or four punches in on Ward, but he didn't follow up on any of them.
None of them really seemed to ever hurt the champ, Andre taunted Green to come at him and fight.
When the fight moved into the later rounds I couldn't find a single round to give to Allan Green. There was serious doubt around the 10th round if he'd finish on his feet. I personally predicted a unanimous decision win for Ward.
Never could I have imagined a total defeat, a 12 round shutout. That is exactly what happened as Green was completely destroyed. When the decision was handed out Green seemed to be happy with just going the distance with Ward.
This poses the question of whether Allan Green should be in there anymore. I do not believe for a minute that Taylor would have been beaten in such a brutal way. (Not saying he'd win.)
I know Green was fighting one of the best fighters in the tourney, however could he beat Kessler, Froch, Abraham or fellow American Andre Dirrell? I don't think he could beat any of these fighters, nor do I believe he could beat the man he replaced, Jermain Taylor.
